Age Group Rank = 15/50
Pre-race routine:

Same as always. Pleasantly surprised with how short this drive was. I think I was there in 30 minutes.
Event warmup:

Transition area was very simple. Unlike, say, Heart of the Lakes, no huge advantage of being in one spot vs. another. Bugs were kinda bad but I didn't have to wait too long. Got setup and had a short stretch.
Swim
  • 16m 22s
  • 880 yards
  • 01m 52s / 100 yards
Comments:

Overall not bad, but my sighting was off due to the glare from the sun. It was fine going out but bad coming back. Sleeveless wetsuit worked out just fine.
What would you do differently?:

Need to invest in some good tinted non-glare goggles.
Transition 1
  • 01m 36s
Comments:

Didnt' feel fast but happy to see my transition was faster than many. Forgot to get gelpacks. I normally take one in the middle of the bike.
What would you do differently?:

Remember the gelpack.

Comments:

Very good time for me. Today's conditions were fast. Little wind and a flat course. I have made a deal with myself that if I can race around 21 mph this year, I get a new Felt B16 at the end of the season.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing. Good time.
Transition 2
  • 00m 51s
Comments:

Good transition. I usually do well on T2. this time felt OK.
Run
  • 24m 10s
  • 3 miles
  • 08m 04s  min/mile
Comments:

Took me a mile and a half to find my groove. I think not having the gelpacks on the bike hurt me a bit, at least mentally. 2nd half of the run was good, though. I was able to get my overall pace down to around 8 with a good final mile.
What would you do differently?:

I should be able to do this in at least the mid-7's. Work on my running.
Post race
Warm down:

I was spent. I pushed it hard on the bike and on the run. A sprint is as hard as you make it, and I really felt this one.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Poor planning of in-race nutrition. Also need to find good goggles or OWS. Any recommendations?

Event comments:

Very nice race. I've grown to like Randy Races. No frills, but nice courses. Long Lake Park was a pleasant surprise -- I don't spend much time up in this part of town. The bike course wasn't particularly pretty (unlike, say, Square Lake) but was very fast. Fun to do a nice, fast course once in a while. I will do this race again instead of Buffalo. Way less crowded and more laid back.
