I completed my first Ironman (Lake Placid) in July 2005. I want to get a tattoo to always remember this great day. Please share your Ironman Finisher tattoo designs and locations.

Fight the temptaion, get a temp or something, but Ive heard too many people ripping on other people who got them. I personally wouldnt want to deal with that.

Max,

I didn't read your post and just scrolled down to the Mermaid trying to figure out how this relates to Ironman! ha..... I always wanted an arm band tattoo and that is a great combo! Thanks for both of your replies.

I think it's a great idea, as anyone with tatoos will tell you...It's not for others, it's for you.

Location is key. One guy who trains at my gym has one on his calve w/ the years he's completed IM circling the M-Dot. It's a little bold for me, but he is a top national age grouper, Kona Qualifier, and a member of the US National Tri Team for his age group, so he can brag

congrats on Lake Placid. I'm looking to finish IMWI in two weeks. Then I have a design for a tat that is a take off on the old triangular triathlon symbol. I'm looking for a graphic artist to create a design w/ Bucky Badger swimming, biking, and running with the M-Dot in the middle of the three sketches.

Congrats on Placid!

i am doing IMWI in 2 weeks as well and my plan is getting a m-dot tat as well, i have a tat on my ankle that i want to cover so that is were i'll put mine, i think a good spot would be on your upper arm/shoulder area. I don't have any design suggestions other than the basic m-dot, but i like simple things.
You may hear a lot of chatter from people against the tat, but remember it's for you, not for them so it doesn't matter what they think.

Shoulder would be my choice but those are already coverd I'd have to either incorporate the M-Dot with at "Steal Your Face" or a tribal shoulder piece...

See you at IMWI...I hoping that we can get a group of BT'rs together to meet face-to-face!

I was thinking about getting one on the inside of my forearm and putting and putting a dot for every one I complete around the logo. The only problem with that is I like to wear short sleeve shirts at work and I don't want any of my tat's to show at work. People look at me funny when they see my tattoo. They have that look "OMFG, YOU have a tattoo?!?!?"

Minkota, I'm all for getting tattos, have you checked out the EXACT meaning of the kanji your looking to get? My friend got a kanji tat and after I got stationed in Japan I had a dictonary and discovered the tatto parlor put the tatto on upside down, also kanji is not exactly the same as english. If you happen to have any asian friends run the kanji symbol by them first and see what they say.

This is important! The kanji for "Ironman" may have a completely different meaning than in English, and it is likely that the chinese and japanese meanings are quite different as well. It`s also really important to go to somebody who knows their kanji. Just one line difference- even a line being longer than it should be- can dramatically change the meaning!

This is sich a big decision for me, one which I will not rush into. I do plan on conquering other Ironman races so I like the idea of something I could add to.

Thanks bunch to all whom have posted.

i have been thinking about this too although i have not finished an Ironman, nor competed in one but it a goal. i have my left arm just about full-sleeved, and would probably put an MDOT on the inside bicep on my right. if it happens to be the Kona race, some Hawiian-esque flowers would accompany it along with the year.

sounds like you got more serious issues to deal with if you are worried about people ripping on you because of what you decide to do.

Just completed my first IM distance race..Chesapeake Bay "ultra distance triathlon." Even though I finished in just over 13 hours I rewarded myself w/the DOT/M tattoo on my forearm. My job in law enforcement allows me certain liberties..tattoos being one of them....Some people might be worried about what others think..getting a tattoo should not be done in haste. You will have to live with it for the rest of your life..and they are as addictive as triathlons. If you want a tattoo, go for it! The "Ironman tattoo" (in my opinion) is a symbol that represents dedication, commitment as well as the celebration of life itself..good luck!!

I just got my tat on Sat, in honor of the day. Eventually, even if it is when I am in my 60s, I want to make it to Kona. Then I will add a hawaiian print around it.

That looks awesome!!! ohhhh.......maybe I should get it on my lower back....humm...

How bad did it hurt? I have one very small tattoo on my foot that took about 5 minutes and that didn't hurt at all. How about filling this in?

daveskar - got it at Hartford County Tattoo. And yes I had to explain the meaning to them, but they thought it was very cool.

Tricomet - It took about 45 mins. the outline was not too bad, but the shading was a little painful since he went continuously for longer periods of time. I picked the lower back because when I ride and run, my tri top rides up so you see that sliver of my back. I hope that it will sych out some of the competition next year in the sprints and olympics. (there are other pics on my album)

I got mine on my right shoulder so when I pass someone they will think " There is no way I can keep up with him"  and when I get passed, they will never know
