I see a lot of people get them on their claves so I mixed it up a bit and put it on my shin, and yes it did hurt there. I have a few others so I knew what I was getting into but the shin hurt. Its just an outline now because the tri season is not over and I want to get back into the water ASAP. (Full tats take longer to heal than outlines) The only gripe that I have with this part of the leg is that it is a completetly symetrical symbol on a noo symetrical part of the body.

As for what others think, I could give a sh*t. They were not with me on my long rides or my runs in the pouring rain. They did not go through it with me. The tat is for me and its MY memory of the race, not theirs.

I've completed two Ironman races in Lake Placid in as many years and still haven't decided on a tattoo which really moves me. As this will be my first permanent body marking, I see no rush.

I'm sure people can see how proud I am of my accomplishments as I wear different Ironman FINISHER shirts, hats, and underoos for every day of the week!

No pressure, its your thing and you should express yourself the way you want.

I found that post by Tony funny also, but I have seen an M-Dot inside of the Maple Leaf.

Tony, if I were you I would def get the one with the American flag though.

Just got mine on the left side of my calf while vacationing in San juan Puerto Rico. thought it would be a good conversation piece. Though, people that know nothing about the Ironman say, "What is that tattoo" and then when you try to explain it to them they look at you like you are crazy. lol I look at it like when the right people look at it they will understand and appreciate the accomplishment.

If everything goes well, I'll be getting mine next July. On the left calf. I'm going to get my brother to help me design something around the MDOT. I agree with everyone that has stated that it's not about anyone else, just you.

I have several pictures of tattoo's on the computer at work. All of them I got from another post on this site some time ago. I'll try and post them next week.

Anyone have a picture of a similar design (american flag in the background), by chance? That sounds awesome.

After finishing IMKY next year I will likely get one; much to my wife's dismay. Maybe I'll use the argument posed earlier on this thread..."you weren't w/ me on my long rides & runs in the rain & July heat babe." It's mine. It will be my second tat. My first was in England when I was 19. I asked the guy if it would hurt. He said "it'll feel like hanging from the yardarms by your testicles." This as I looked over at my buddy with his head between his knees because he passes out by the sight of blood; especially his own. That was pretty funny.

Just wondering if anyone has gotten a tattoo on the upper back/lower neck? I'm tattooless at this point and moving up from HIM distance in 2009. If successful, this will be my one and only tattoo. (Just dreaming of the right placement while on my long bike rides!)

To me, the M-Dot tattoo represents the triathlon's world's "Red Badge of Courage"....and I think it is a personal representation of one's efforts whether you are a pro, an elite, a top age grouper, or mid-grouper/back packer age grouper. Each person has there own victorious story and let NO ONE take that away from anyone of you that already wears the M-Dot or is comtemplating getting a well earned M-Dot Tattoo! I don't give a "f#$&" whether you finished the event in under 12 hours or just made the 17 hour or 18 hour cut off! You had the perseverance to see it through. I, myself, look up to those who have completed an Ironman Distance and hope to join you in those ranks!
