I have two pair, full and half finger and I wear them training and racing. They both are designed with a section of something almost like terry cloth on the back of the thumb over to about half the back of the hand for wiping sweat off your face. I take the couple seconds and put them on in T1 and wear them through the run.

I wear them all the time on my road bike.

On my TT bike during training...most of the time I don't...because I don't race with them.  That being said, the only two times I've gone down on my bike...were on my TT bike in training.  And I wish I had worn gloves.

training yes - my training rides are longer than races and I want to be comfortable and the biggest thing is if I wreck my hands have some protection. Also riding bunched up in a group I'm probably at a greater risk of falling than when in a race where I'm not drafting anyone.

Races no- especially in sprints which is my current distance since I'm new to this, maybe longer distances they have a use but for now they don't.

Training: always.

Racing: Sprints=no.  Oly=you make the call.  HIM or IM=Yes.

Take them off in T2 (or better yet, while still on the bike approaching T2).

Training yes

Racing, also yes when the weather is sketchy.  Last time I raced without them on, it was a rainy morning last January (2010) and I went down.  I've still got the scar on the heel of my hand from where I slid across the pavement.

always.

I consider them a piece of safety gear.

for a race- I leave them velcroed onto my bars and put them on during the ride.

This.  I had a bad crash a few weeks ago and my gloves saved my palms from being torn to shreds. Decided to always wear them after that experience.

My only experience is a sprint and a HIM.  For the sprint I used nothing.  For the HIM I placed my gloves in one of my jersey pockets (I put the jersey on in T1) and put them on as I was riding.  I was probably the only one in the race wearing gloves (that I could see) but I was really glad I had them.  I have 3 for training with different thicknesses.  I wouldn't ride without them, but that's just me.

merlin2375 - 2011-06-08 8:48 AM I wear full finger gloves for all training rides and do race with them. I put mine on in T1 after putting on cycling shoes, and take them off in T2 after changing to running shoes.

You put your running shoes on while wearing full gloves?

I wear gloves for training any time I'm on the road (as opposed to trainer), and never in racing (Sprints and Oly's only).

John

I was almost to the first turnaround on the run in my HIM last weekend when I realized I still had my riding gloves on, so yes, it can be very easy to wear gloves and put on running shoes.

I don't wear them for training or racing unless it's cold. I see them as safety equipment, but choose not to wear them. If I do a bike race, I'll wear them them but that hasn't come up in many, many years.

I'm in the "no gloves" camp... As much as temperature permits.

Even when I was bike racing, I wouldn't wear gloves if it wasn't needed for temperature considerations. With a correct road fit and core strength, there should be very little weight on your hands. On a tri bike, you should be on the aero's most of the time...

Glad I was able to generate such a discussion.

Went for a brick trial today for my first tri in several weeks. It was nearly 100 degrees out with similar humidity (ouch). Decided not to use my gloves and was fine. Thought it would be nasty in this weather to wear gloves glad I didn't - I was sweating enough. Probobly will skip them for my first tri which is a sprint. (also skipping the socks if weather is anything like it was today - have done fine without them without blister issues)....thanks for the imput everyone (OP)

I always wear gloves when training and commuting, but never during racing.

I wore them when I first started and haven't since I realized how long it was taking in transitions. I started training without them to get used to it and haven't worn them since...Unless it's cold but then I use full finger gloves.
Only one time have I ever wished I had them and that was because it was an extremely hot and humid day and my hands were sweating and slippery.

I don't even own a pair of gloves.   I only have a tri bike and spend 98% of the time aero....so they'd be pretty useless.

Hmm, no race experience yet, so.... I have an Oly in about two months. Not planning on wearing gloves then - just trying to go as simple and minimal as I can.

Therefore I don't wear them in training either.
