Subject: Bike gloves - yes or no?

As a newbie I've gotten use to using bike gloves for rides in training. Do others use gloves for training? In an actual Triathlon?

If you use them when do you put them on? T1? Once you've started riding?

When do you take them off? At end of ride? T2? Just run with them on?

I never use them for training or racing.  If you're soaking wet coming out of the water they will be hard to get on and you'll waste valuable time putting them on and taking them off.

I wear them when its cold or if I'm riding in a group on my road bike.

In an actual Triathlon?

Never.

I think it will differ person to person.  When I ride with groups, drafting etc, I will wear them just in case, to prevent road rash of the hands etc. Good padding when hands are exclusively on bars/drops etc. More weight bearing on hands.

When I ride alone or in a race I prefer not to wear them as I tend to have less of a death grip while riding. Plus while hands are on the aerobars most of the time I serves minimal purpose for me.

JMHO.

Training always.  Only wear the gloves in case of wreck to help protect my hands (if I can't type, I can't work).

Racing never...but I ride aero so no need for cushion.  Not sure how the hands would feel on a roadie for three hours w/o gloves though.

If it is cold then have a pair handy, though I might suggest if it is cold have a pair of cross country ski gloves (they are light weight).

x2 to this for cold weather; the only time I wear anything but lightweight x-country ski gloves is when the temperature goes below -10C.

Below about 50 degrees I'll put them on, even during a race. I wore them last year for the first half of the B2B bike course until the temp went above about 60.

I never do, but did for IMTX last month and was glad I did.  Shorter races don't waste the time

Training, usually, and almost always with the road bike.

Racing, only once, for B2B because of the cold.

ETA: Just saw the comments about ski gloves.  Those are unknown in these parts (!), but I wore mountain biking gloves and they were great for B2B.

always.

I consider them a piece of safety gear.

for a race- I leave them velcroed onto my bars and put them on during the ride.

I wear them on my MTB and road bike in training. Never wear them on my tri bike (ergo, never when racing--well, MTb and track races, yes. Tri/dus, no).

Always in training and never in racing.

I know the typical advice is to not do anything new on race day, but when it comes down to a race, gloves are such a small thing that it's really irrelevant.

Always in training and at work, considered a piece of safety equipment by department, did wear them in my 1st tri not sure if I would again...

Good bike gloves will keep you from experienceing guyon syndrome and carpral tunnel syndrome in addition to some other hand maladies...

not really supposed to be stopping road rash if you fall off the bike and land hand first you care less about your hand as most of the time you have a broken collarbone or dislocated shoulder, tuck and roll if you go down, at least that's what we are taught

I wear them for long rides and training when my hands get schweaty .  I will not be wearing them for my races.. Too hard to put on and off (I'm only racing sprints)..

I wear full finger gloves for all training rides and do race with them. I put mine on in T1 after putting on cycling shoes, and take them off in T2 after changing to running shoes.

I wear them all the time for training inside and out. I would like to wear them during a tri but they are too hard to put on when your hands are wet. But that is the reason I like to have them on. I get a better dryer grip on the bars. I don't like the fact that if my hands are wet or sweaty during a tri and I am riding with out gloves. I want dry hands and gloves do that for me.

I never wear them. But I don't ride when its freezing cold. And I would never use them in a race.

I've only worn them when I ride in the winter.  In the summer it gets so hot in MS that they would do more harm than good, and not wearing them saves precious seconds in transition.

A lot of these answers need one more bit of information or so

Does the rider have/use aerobars?

Those who are on road bikes without aerobars might have a completely different view on whether gloves are appropriate than those that ride with and use aerobars.

You put your running shoes on while wearing full gloves?

I wear gloves for training any time I'm on the road (as opposed to trainer), and never in racing (Sprints and Oly's only).

as a newbie to tri's, but a long time bike rider that always wears gloves (from a 10 mile ride to a 50 mile ride) i'm gonna have to change my mind about wearing gloves during a tri.  After looking at how terrible my T1 and T2 times were, i need to shave off valuable seconds, and i think i fumbled w/ my gloves the other day.  not worth it to me for a 12-15 mile ride when time matters.  maybe on longer distances tho...

100% in training.  I always have, but my last bike coach was the daughter of a hand surgeon so she was pretty keen on gloves for training.  I skip the gloves for shorter distances now.  I think I will adopt her approach for deciding on gloves during a race, including how crowded, road conditions, wierd turns or sudden uphills where people might wipe out or veer off course?

I have road bike with aero bars.    Only HIM I did was cold so I actually wore full-finger gloves on that one.  I put them on on the bike if I do wear them in a race.

In training I consider them to be safety equipement and always have them on.  I make the decision on race day to wear them or not.  If the bike course is wet I will plan to put them on in T1. There is a higher risk of going down when the roads are wet.  A little bit of baby powder inside the gloves and they slip right on.  Once they're on, they stay on until the end of the race.
