One of the lessons from my first tri was I need a new helmet. The one I've been using is fine for family rides, but it does not stay securely in the same place on my head when cycling hard especially on a bumpy surface.

So who out there got an inexpensive helmet, and is very pleased with it? Links please.

If your helmet (a) had to be fitted to your head in a wind tunnel, (b) is made of carbon-unobtanium-platinum composite, (c) had to be financed with a second mortgage, I do not want to talk to you Wink. Under $50 would fit my budget nicely.

Plus if it comes in blue.

I picked up the Bell Lumen from my local cycle shop and it works great. It is comfortable and looks great. As for price, it retails at $65.

I have a Bell Alchera that can usually be found for less than $50.  At one time it was was my back up, but when my $225 Giro kicked the bucket it became my primary and I never really noticed the difference.

Bell Lumen/Specialized Echelon.  Those two are some of the least expensive helmets that come sized instead of one size fits all.  And I hate to say it, but if your helmet moves around when you're riding during a race it's not going to be worth anything on rides with the family either.  It needs to stay in place to do its job.

Bell Furio... under $35 from Performance and light. Can't find a valid link yet so it's probably discontinued. Still should be plenty out there though. Make sure it fits properly.

I also have the Bell Alchera and it works well for me. Ventilation is pretty good and it is relatively inexpensive.

X2. I've got one. And they've got a pretty cool paint scheme, too. Almost no one will be able to tell you're wearing a cheap, I mean economical, helmet

ETA: wow, just hopped out to the Performance site and they've got the Transfer on sale for $20.

Nashbar is right now having a closeout on last year's helmets.  Lots of good deals.

I see Bell and Giro helmets starting at 19.99.

Check out the Bell Sweep Race helmet for $49.99, normally 139.99.

I wear a Trek Vapor. Fits me nice and snug. Don't know if they still make them though. Seems to be out of stock everywhere.
