I want to increase my strength and turn over and want to start using paddles again. i haven't used them since high school swim team. I've only used the small rectangle speedo paddles. Now a days it seems there are about 5 million different shapes and designs.

So what brand/ style do you prefer to build strength and endurance?

I use TYR Mentor,,,,size small. Haven't used them in a while, but thats what I have. By the way I am not a strong swimmer, but they were recommended by a strong swimmer, does that count?

Just about any of them work for me, I prefer ones that have a hand "shape" to them. Tyr makes a very nice paddle. If you haven't used them in a long time, then I'd recommend getting the pair that is basically the same size as your hand. The larger the paddle, the bigger the stress on the shoulders.

ok good. that was my thinking. "bigger paddle = more stress". my rotator cuffs would rather not get destroyed anymore, high school was rough on them haha.

Strong swimmer here.    I love my training toys, but paddles are not amongst them.    Without them I am still flirting with shoulder injury.  I know if I use them I will for sure injure myself.

At my age injury prevention is a foremost consideration.

Just my opinion.

I have a pair of Speedo "training paddles". They are not at all fancy. I bet they are every bit of 18 years old. I have replaced the straps on them once and that was late last year.

I use the TYR Catalyst size large.

One think that I saw in your post was your desire to increase turnover.  Why?  Are you getting everything out of the stroke that you have now?  If not you are just burning energy with a small return for speed.  Stroke form would be the first thing that I would look at.  If your have great stroke form, the yes, the increae in turnover would be a boost.

I like the gloves with the webbing.  I have small hands and these stay put very well.

You could use your hands? That's what I do and mine work really well. I've never had to replace them either.

So what brand/ style do you prefer to build strength and endurance?

The ones you were born with will be the most effective.  After that, Strokemakers are the best

yes i have maximized my stroke as it is. i'm working on a little faster turnover, stronger kick, and overall strength in my arms.

Strokemax Antipaddle

I tend to be an "on the cheap" trainer, so my equivalent to the above is to swim with a tennis ball in each hand.

Good idea. I suppose making a fist would suffice, too.

Are you looking to train technique or just add resistance to your swim? My wife has these paddles that force a correct hand entry because she was having issues in that area. If this sounds like something you need I'll go look and see what kind they are.

I took some lessons a couple of winters ago, and my coach wanted me to use big paddles to make me stronger. I have the TYR ones also.

It is my opinion of course. I have used several and find the Strokemakers do the best job of working on all of the things that you use paddles for. You can't use bad technique with them, they force your hands into the water a specific way.
