So I've decided to do savageman...anybody go out and buy/use a different cassette then they normally do? Any recommendations on what I should look for? Pretty sure I'll need more gears...

I have same question and thinking to replace the full size crank with the compact.  I have 11-28T cassette.

As you I have just completed Eagleman and starting my training for Savageman.

I did it last year with a 12-25 and a compact, though wouldn't have minded a few extra gears.  It looks like the "official" SM thread just started today in the Iron Distance forums - you may get more hits there.

I did Savageman in 09, Have a standard Trek Road bike, went out to preview the course, came home, went to bike shop and ordered compact crank and larger cassette.

I also make it up the wall but only because I practiced.

Check out the previous "officail threads" from years past for plenty of gearing discussions.  I think if you search "savageman" (see magnifying glass on top right of your screen) you should get plenty of good results.

I've done the race twice and rode:

#1 - triple with 12-25... did not clear the wall but did win clydesdale division.

#2 - compact with 11-28... cleared the wall but had the worst race of my life.

Bottom line unless you are a beast of a cyclist, you cannot have too many gears.  Go ride the course this summer and you'll see gearing isn't something to not take seriously.
