Subject: Pocono 70.3 Bike Course
Hello Penn Peeps.   The nice folks hosting the inagural Ironman Pocono 70.3 race finally posted the bike course.

http://www.ironmanpoconomountains.com/event-info/course-maps

There is a parade of people now whining and crying about the hills on the Pocono 70.3 facebook page about the hills.  My guess is a lot people commenting on the Pocono facebook page are doing their first 70.3

Has anyone ridden parts of this course or in the that areaMy first reaction at seeing the elevation profile was that they put together a pretty tame and easy bike course.  I expected something much worse seeing as it's in the mountains.  Compared to the Rev3 and Harryman 70.3 courses, this course looks like gentle rollers.  Can any experienced athletes comment and share their thoughts, please. Thanks

Are you kidding me?? They sign up for a race in the Pocono mountains and than complain about hills.  I only see 2 places with a gain of about 300 feet. The rest of the "hills" are not more than 50 feet in gain.  Exactly where are we supposed to ride in the poconos for a flat profile.  They should sign up for Eagleman.

I suspect that a lot of people don't know how to read a profile, so they don't realize that the vertical scale is not the same as the horizontal.

Those hills dont look all that bad.  If you do any kind of riding in PA you will encounter hills like that.  As it is, it seems quite a bit more "mild" than I had expected.

EXACTLY!! I looked at and thought this course is going to be much easier than i anticipated. The elevation gain around my house is more than this course. excite for this race!!

Has anyone ridden the bike course yet. I'm looking to come up some weekend and ride it.  Does anyone know of any planned practice rides in the area?

I was actually surprised when I saw the course profile. I thought it would have had more intense climbing.  It looks like a nice course with a good variety of ups and downs.  It is possible those folks complaining aren't reading the profile correctly and just see spikes.  I agree, though - suck it up and train :-)

I am not aware of anything planned but I would be willing to make a road trip for a OWS/Bike ride. Anyone know if the swim area is open so we might get some swimming in?

I have looked for OWS op's in the area but have not yet found any.  I plan to check out the bike course this weekend, so I will report back.

I did, however, sign up for a Poconos tri camp being held at the HIM site from Aug 13-14.  This may be our only op to swim in the Delaware. Here is the link:  http://www.cadencecycling.com/training/schedule/camps/

If anyone knows of OWS anywhere near Philadelphia, so sick of Wenonah Lake, fill me in.  I'm willing to drive over an hour or longer if good biking is involved!

Happy training.

I have gone to Blue Marsh Lake (near Reading, PA) several times this year. In each case we have done a swim followed by a bike ride. I had hoped to do another one this weekend but it isn't going to happen with me, other things have come up. I will probably go a few more times this summer though. I will post on the PA forum the next time.

I'm hearing a couple different things about the bike course, but mostly that it's hilly. Can anyone who previewed the course compare it to the Quassy course? Timberman course?

I found several GPS profiles from some of the people that have done the course.  Corrected by Garmin they come in around 3300 Vertical feet.  I ran one GPX file through an analyzer and got the attached profile.  The IM provided profile looks like 1500 Vertical... the catch is that they lack the detail that shows the other 1500 vertical .

Finding number 2.... the map provided by IM for the Pocono run is only 12 miles.  If you analyze the run route based on the map, it does not include a 5% grade near the turnaround.  If you extend the run another .6 miles up Wooddale Rd you do get a 5% grade which would make the run 13.1 total.  It will be interesting to see what they do on race day.

Here is a GPS profile.... Note his starting route is not the exact course but it is roughly the same distance if not longer.  I got the same distance mapping the course on map my run.

Anyone up for riding the course this Saturday?  Think I'm going to head up in the AM and wouldn't mind some company (especially if you're familiar with the area/roads)

I might be.  Depends on the time; I'm coming from Philly, so looking at a 2 hour drive to get there.  I could probably do 08:00 or later.

My Dad and I rode the bike course this past weekend.  My Dad is an animal - cyclist only, no tri's for him.  He thought the course was a ride in the park.  The two major climbs - Mountain Road and Turkey Hill Road I believe, were challenging and slow for me, but I'm also not a great cyclist, and this will be my first 70.3.  That being said, it took us 4:07 to complete the course, and we stopped a lot to verify directions on course.

My goal is just to finish, and I'm looking forward to it.

How were the road conditions?  One other member posted as of a couple weeks ago that one road was still unpaved, just wondering if the township has gotten around to paving it.

Thanks for the update. Anyone else ride the course this weekend and can give us a realistic, sane, level-headed review of Difficulty and Road Conditions?? *Please, no batshiit crazy slowtwit reviews.

I found this on map my ride. How can there be so many different elevations on the same course.

I am looking at it as somewhere between 0 and 3500 feet of elevation gain. That way I can't complain...
