Subject: RE: Cutting Cable

I just did this last week.  My cable bill was $200 ($50 for internet, $110 for cable TV, and $40 for landline phone).

Now I'm keeping just my internet through Cox cable, for about $50/month, I believe.  Bought a Roku, and subscribed to Netflix and Hulu Plus, and I've already got Amazon Prime.  Since cell phone reception is horrible inside my apt., I bought a Nettalk Duo.  It plugs into the cable modem, and you just plug your regular phone into it.  You get your own phone number, and it's just $30/year.  (Or I believe there is a lifetime option too, if you prefer.)

Easily saving $125/month or more.

The one thing that really irks me is HBO.  I'm *more* than willing to pay $10 for an internet-only HBO subscription so I can watch True Blood and Game of Thrones.  And they even offer HBO over the internet through HBO GO, but in order to use it, you must also be a cable TV subscriber!  Totally lame.  So, I'll just get the episodes as bit torrents and watch them that way, and for sure I'll purchase the DVDs when they come out.  And as soon as HBO gets out of the stone age, and offers an internet-only subscription, I'll sign up!

I forgot to mention that I do have a TERK antenna in the attic. I went to the cable box and disconnected the line coming in from the utility company. I fished it back into the attic and connected my antenna to it. I then hung the antenna up on the wall.

I took a simple 5' cable and connected my tv to the wall, which really just goes to the antenna in the attic. I get 13 channels that way.

Surprisingly, there is no shortage of shows.

And with the xbox, it now streams ESPN, so you're good on sports too. The only thing you'll miss is sportscenter.

So for all of you cable free folk, what do you use for internet?  I have always been afraid to use anything other than cable since I rely so heavily on internet.

I don't own a tv. Haven't in many years. Don't miss it at all.

I do watch shows/movies on my laptop. My Hulu+ cup runneth over. I don't have time for everything in my queue.

I have DSL through AT&T.  The speed is fine and it's a flat $40/month.

Comcast charges $45 for internet alone, or if I have limited cable (15 channels) it's $45 for that and internet, but I believe I have a bit of a slower connection. No issue for me, though! I had cable for a few years in college, but I haven't paid for cable in 7 years. We also haven't had a working remote for the television for 5 years, that's how little we actually watch 'TV'- just Netflix for us!

That's about what we were paying for DSL too and we were downloading at about 400KB/s which was fine for HD streaming. We switched to cable for a better deal (we're paying only a little more for about 4-5x the speed).

So I picked up the Roku XD last night, and we've already watched some kids shows on it.  Quality is pretty good, which I was worried about. Hulu+ has a deal to get a month free with my wife's .edu e-mail account, so we'll be checking that out later.  I was looking yesterday at what was available on Hulu+ and was a bit disappointed.  Looks like the shows I currently watch are only available on Hulu.  I know I could setup a PC to connect to my TV, I'd rather not add yet another device.

I'll let everyone know how it goes once we get Hulu+.  It would be cool to cut the cable bill.
