Just saw that the "Athlete's Guide" is available.  Who is racing this year?

I'm hoping the run is about 20 degrees cooler than last year!

Right now I'm just praying for a 10 degree break from what we have had lately. I'm excited though.

10 degrees would be great!!!  20 would be AWESOME!!  but it looks like highs in the mid to upper 90s.

I'm preparing mentally for the heat

It's going to be hot and miserable on the run. Even more so for me because I seem to have mostly forgotten about training for that whole running thing. Tongue out

93 degrees during the run was an eye opener last year.  I'm going sock-less this year, and probably will use arm coolers on the run as well Cool

Do arm coolers really work?  They seem just like arm warmers to me (when I have looked at them) and that they would make me sweat more ( I do that way to well on my own).

I was skeptical when I first saw them, but have rea  few differnet reviews about how they work, and the science seems logical.  I got a free pair from Doc Amanda Stevens at a Clinic I attended, I'm going to try them one of my remianing runs before next weekend.

Anybody got a water temp yet??? Just wondering if I'm going to have rush and get a new swim skin, since my PZ3 isn't legal anymore.

We were worried about the temp last year, since it was above wetsuit-legal in the week before the race. Lo and behold, the temp magically dropped a couple of degrees for the official measurement. Regardless, I have absolutely zero shot at awards, so I will be wearing my wetsuit no matter what the temp is.

I suspect they take a boat to the center of the res, and send the thermometer to the bottom with a fishing weight to get the right reading Wink

I'll be right there with ya. I'm wearing my sleeveless wetsuit, no matter what.

Still not sure if I will wear my full. Chatfield was hot and I'm no slower with out it. Taper week... did a time trial on the bike yesterday to beat the rain. Did another today on the way home and did a qick 3 mile brick. It started sprinkling half way through my run. I was trying to soak it in. Enjoy the coolness, and tried to make a happy place for me to go in two weeks.

To those that are definitely wearing wetsuits regardless of temperature:

Why do you wear one?  Is it the buoyancy or do you actually get that much speed increase from wearing one?  Is it just the psychological factor associated?  I come from a swimming background and I've actually found that on warm days it's more of a pain to wear a wetsuit.  My core body temperature gets too high and I'm already sweating coming out of the water.  I'd personally rather save that exertion for the bike.  I'm not judging or doing a poll, just curious is all.  Good luck to all of you- I'm going to be in Chicago the day of this race so no bouncing @ Lefthand for me this year!

I'm in. I haven't done this race yet, so I'm looking forward to it and also hoping for a temperature decrease. I'll likely wear my wetsuit as well. It's funny because I know I can swim the distance no problem, but I'll feel better with the buoyancy. I'm not in any danger of placing either.

I recently picked up a sleeveless wetsuit and will definitely be wearing it. Likewise from a swimming background, I dont need the 'free float' but will take it for the net energy savings to be had. While I got the sleeveless for better shoudler rotation/mobility, I have also found that the large arm gussets help with upper body cooling, and its a bit easier to get out of.

Also I have compared it to swimming in the tri top only, the wetsuit is definitely more comfortable and there's less drag.  Having said all that, I will probably get a swim skin for next year, if I can figure out how to sneak it into the budget!

I swam in Boulder Res this morning. It felt quite comfortable in a full wetsuit. I was told that they measured it at 77 degrees last week, and that worried me for the race. But I'm hoping that they'll find a cooler place to measure by next week.

I did the Denver Tri last week at Sloans Lake (my 1st). I was going to wear the wetsuit regardless of temperature up until 5 minutes before the start. I figured I paid for it, trained with it and had my mind set. Then another guy I was talking to said I was crazy that the temp would make me heat up and would be sweating before i needed to anyway. So I scrapped the wetsuit and went with Tri top. It was a tight top but I did feel like I was heavier and drag...I have heard that wetsuits help slower swimmers But not much benefit for good swimmers ? Additionally, I learned to drink more than I did as I became sluggish during the last 2 miles of the run - heat combined with sweating, losing about 10 lbs didn't help. I was breathing too hard on the bike to really get enough fluids!I wish I was doing the HIM but will need to wait till next year. Good luck to all.

So went out for a brick today. Last long one. An Oly brick... heat got me again. Didn't start running till 1:00pm... thought it would be ok, had a little breeze... Ya, got into some dead air and that's all she wrote.... Took me an hour to go 5 miles. Weather is looking good next week, won't be out that late... but ya, it's going to be a hoot. Drank two quarts of Gatorade and still lost 4 pounds.

I wore a wide brim camp hat for this run ('09) and long sleeve tech shirt, got head/arms doused at every single aid station, that's what it took for me to stay cool. I overheat easily.

HAVE FUN OUT THERE, you all will kick azz I know!

Current forecasts suggest that the temps shouldn't be too bad on Sunday.

Also, I went out for a big brick session on the bike & run courses a couple of days ago, in the middle of the day, and noticed that the dirt roads that make up almost all of the run course seem to help in the heat/sun. As soon as I left the dam path and rejoined the tarmac road, it immediately felt much warmer, due to the heat that was radiating from the road. So now I've stopped grumbling about the fact that the run will not be on regular roads.

I rode a loop of the course yesterday and ended up with 3 flats before making it back to my car - ugh!!  One thorn puncture, then broken glass.  And now, need a whole new tire.  But at least it was my training wheel set.

Not to scare anyone, but might wanna make sure you've got your flat repair stuff ready for the weekend.

I think they generally run the street sweepers the night before the race so hopefully the roads will be cleaned up!

Perhaps I've been more lucky, but I've ridden the race loop 8 times in the past couple of weeks, and no flats. But I'll be changing out my Gatorskins for race tires by the weekend, so perhaps I shouldn't be too overconfident.

I have to stop looking at the weather for Sunday.  Each time I do the high temp goes up and the percent of cloud cover goes down!  Looks like it will Sunny and mid 80s for the run.
