Overall Rank = 32/125

Age Group Rank = 7/22
Pre-race routine:

Spent the day and night at Jeff's SILs, we went up to the lake on Saturday Morning and spent the day doing Lake stuff. Sunning , Reading, Boating, etc. Had a good dinner Sat night and a couple of adult beverages and went to bed.

Up about 6 on Sunday morning. Drove over parked and started to get ready.
Event warmup:

This is where things start to get interesting. Get parked and get my bike out the truck. Rear tire is flat. Didn't bring my bike tool box because of the coolers / food & more food / etc. for being at the cabin. Can't get the rear tube to hold air so I have to use the one out of my race kit. Hope I don't get a flat during the race, cause now I don't have tube. Change the tire at the truck and cannot get the clincher to grab by the valve. Three tries later...... just waiting for the pinch flat! (Keep diggin') Hope the rest of the day doesn't all go this way!!

Off to set up Transition. Ran up the hill and back down for 10 minutes. Swam for 10 minutes. Race director comes on the intercom and says the race is going to be wetsuit legal. How did they pull that off? So its back to transition for the wetsuit, gonna use it if everybody else is.....which they were. (Keep diggin') Oh, ever try to put on wetsuit when you are already wet? Don't try.

I think I am ready to race.
Swim
  • 21m 46s
  • 1640 yards
  • 01m 20s / 100 yards
Comments:

Good swim, got up front and found some feet and just went with it. Sighting was tough and I could have been straighter, but everybody was all over with the same issue. No landmarks on shore at all by the outer buoy, just a forest of trees that all looked alike. (Keep diggin')
What would you do differently?:

Swim straighter. That sounds so easy but can be so hard.
Transition 1
  • 00m 59s
Comments:

Once again ..... thanks for the motivation Skinny.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing, this transition was about as perfect as a transition can be in a Race environment.
Bike
  • 1h 07m 58s
  • 24 miles
  • 21.19 mile/hr
Comments:

My intention was to hammer on the bike and see what happens with the run. Goal was to be at 220+ watts average. The hills made holding any steady wattage tough, but I did what I could do without spiking over the 350 mark. Stomach started talking back a little around mile 15, (Keep diggin') but I slowed down a little bit and it came back around somewhat. It was hot again, thinking maybe I tried to take in to many calories on the ride?

Very happy with this bike on this technical and hilly course.
Avg Power = 198
N Power = 227
VI = 1.15
TSS = 112
IF = 0.997
Cal = 790
Max Power = 602
11 surges at 4.0 - 6.0
9.2% of time = zero watts

1 bottle w/ 2 scoops HEED and 1 scoop SE. (350 Cals)
1 bottle water

What would you do differently?:

Remember the 1st 5 miles of this ride are uphill. I came out of the water with a High HR and it was tough to get it under control at the beginning of the bike with the hills.
Transition 2
  • 01m 10s
Comments:

Took my feet out of the bike shoes a little early because its all downhill to transition. And I still need to wear socks on the run and struggled a little getting them on with the wet grassy transition. (Keep diggin')

I will try harder next time Johnny!
What would you do differently?:

Not pull my feet so early.

Figure out how to toughen up my feet....
Run
  • 55m 41s
  • 6.21 miles
  • 08m 58s  min/mile
Comments:

Oh if only I could run. AG winner came out of the water with me and off the bike with me. Then crushed me on the run by 10+ minutes! I came off the bike and felt pretty good. HR was still on the rivet and I was still battling the stomach a little, but I got a PR in my sights. (Keep diggin')

So I set my pace up the hills and start trodding along at 9:15 miles up hill. I am right at LT on the HR Scale and I am getting passed like I am standing still, (Keep diggin') I remind myself to just keep running MY race. Just keep moving and taking on water at every aid station.

Get to the turn around and pick it up a little bit. Stomach starts coming back and HR is still high, but decent. (Keep diggin') On the way home I get all those folks that passed me on the run out and more. I still would have liked to have been around 8:30's, but once again the weather didn't cooperate and pushing the bike sure showed up at the beginning of the run.

I think I am really close to being able to really dial in the bike power / run pace balance during races.
What would you do differently?:

I figure I could blame my Mom and Dad for my Hockey Player build genetics and keep whining about my run paces. NOOOOOOO ......

Really nothing. I really just took what the day provided.
Post race
Warm down:

Blazeman rolled the finish (Keep diggin') and hung with the Peeps from the lake. Three bottles of water. Packed up and headed back to the cabin for a day on the lake. Starving ..... ate all day. One of the best parts of racing.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Run focus. Run focus. Run focus. (Keep diggin')

I know what Out-season will be focused on this year.

Event comments:

New Oly PR for me on a tough course. Jeff was with me today.

(Keep diggin')

Very nice, great race, sub 2:30 is awesome.

When you're able to get in a good pace after a good bike let me know the secret!  Also hills out of T1 suck.  No time to catch your breath before you get going.
