Age Group Rank = 21/25
Pre-race routine:

Apple, Banana, Clif Bar, 20 oz. Infinit
Event warmup:

Stretch, 10 min. jog, 10 min. swim, stretch some more
Swim
  • 39m 21s
  • 1500 meters
  • 02m 37s / 100 meters
Comments:

Wow, that water was HOT! Pushed the first 200m to 1st buoy for position, then settled down into more deliberate pace. Drafted OK, but needed to sight more (seemed to drift left)
What would you do differently?:

Focus on good pacing and remembering technique, remember to sight regularly
Transition 1
  • 01m 45s
Comments:

Took it REALLY slow to get the heart rate back down after the hot tub session, walked the whole way. Technical mount line meant no flying mounts.
What would you do differently?:

Colder waters so I'm not so wiped at the end of the swim
Bike
  • 1h 28m 1s
  • 24 miles
  • 16.36 mile/hr
Comments:

The sprint course always had hills and technical parts, and the Int'l distance course was ... more hills. The small 1-lane bridge w/ ruts was not as bad as I expected. Lots of time in the small gear. Beautiful country, though. Made sure I didn't hammer too much so my body could absorb the fluids I was drinking.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing
Transition 2
  • 01m 38s
Comments:

Again, took it easy to get the HR down and enjoy the heat-fest
What would you do differently?:

Race in cooler weather
Run
  • 1h 16m 9s
  • 6.21 miles
  • 12m 16s  min/mile
Comments:

Hilly, Sunny, HOT (90+deg), MUGGY (90%), all add up to the BATAAN DEATH MARCH. The first loop was hot, the second loop would have been impossible w/o walking at each of the water stops to douse myself and drink, and make sure my body could absorb the fluids. Also decided not to push it to make sure my achilles tendon didn't flare up. Legs felt really weak at mile 5 going uphill, thank goodness the course ended on a downhill.
What would you do differently?:

Avoid injuries, do more hill work and heat acclimation before the race
Post race
Warm down:

WARM-down??? Try COOL-DOWN! Dipped my butt in an ice bath kiddie pool, AAAAAAHHHHH; drink Infinit Recovery, then tons of water.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Duh, HEAT?

Event comments:

I loved this inaugural Int'l Distance race. More time to enjoy this beautiful venue. The volunteers were fantastic, and the ice-baths at the finish were a God-send.

Great race and report!

I didn't jump in the ice bath but I did dip my hat in there which helped.  The race was well run but I just wish the volunteers at the run turnaround would have been a bit more vocal.  Oh well...

It was a great venue though and the bike course was a serious blast.

Nice race!  Way to tough out the heat.  I don't think it was as bad for the sprint on Sunday.  Love that course - look forward to doing the International next year.
