What are the best bridges for hill training in Pinellas County? I normally ride from Clearwater Beach south, and the only bridge I've done is the Sand Key bridge.

Too bad they don't allow bikes (or pedestrians) on it...

Any of you remember the 5K they held on it just before they opened it?

Even though you can't do the Skyway there is the bike path that goes over the Missner just before it. Definitely a good workout. Although it's not crazy high, it's long and gives you a good hills workout.

That just went on my to-do-soon list!

I wasn't here when they opened the new bridge, but I heard about it. Maybe it's time for another race across.

If you live in Pinellas I assume you already humping the 3 ladies.  Claire(Clearwater), Sandy(Sand Key) and Bella(Bellair) done clockwise is my training route.  It's just under 20 miles.  If you do Bella make sure you go from the beach to mainland since you can get a 2-4-1 coming up the hill.

This is where I do my hill workouts - the Ringling Bridge over Sarasota Bay.  Nice wide bike lanes and separate sidewalks.
Rode over and back yesterday while riding from the mainland out to Longboat Key and back.

I haven't done that in a long time. For awhile, there was a lot of broken glass on both sides. It does look a lot cleaner these days so it might be worth doing again.

I've not done that. Claire was out in the past because there used to be too much broken glass in the past, and Bella has been bypassed since I ride straight down the islands from Clearwater Beach. Lately I have been thinking about adding an out-and-back over Bella in the middle. Sandy is on every ride.

I don't like to ride in town because of all the stops, but Claire-Sandy-Bella-Bella-Sandy-Claire on my soon-to-be-incorporated hill days could be a winner. Awesome idea to put all three in the same workout.

They also need to put u-turn lanes on these things so we can go back and forth as many times as we want. Maybe on the next generation of bridges...

When you hit bella coming from Gulf Blvd you get a nice little double going up the otherside(pitstop at Panera if needed), just make sure you don't go fast on the backside of Bella otherwise you can literally go more than half way up the hill that leads to the mainland.

I have noticed since they have redone both bridges it "seems" to be cleaner than before.

If you follow the Sand Key Tri bike route around the 3 ladies is almost 14 miles and not alot of traffic concerns since your cutting through the residental neighborhood by Morton PLant Hospital.

Suggestion, leave Clw Beach over Claire, take a right of Ft Harrison, nice bike lane, take a right towards the Biltmore(3rd light where the trail meets) and a left in Indian Rocks road(3 way stop sign), there will only be 1 4-way stop sign and the second light is West Bay, Take another right over Bella and then take it down to Gulf Blvd.

Remeber, no speeding(never a concern when im on my bikeCry) in Bellair as they have a notorious reputation for nabbing speeders.

The ride me and my friends like is what we call the bridges. Start at chainwheel on keene and drew ride down to ulmerton and cross the walsingham bridge, ride down gulf blvd. then over sand key, then ridge down and go over the clearwater bridge and back to the LBS. It is a good workout and about 25 miles.

I ride the Ringling bridge as well and actually they do have u-turns (sort of).  At each end of the bridge there is a small park with a road that crosses under the bridge to the other side.  So you can actually keep doing a figure 8-style ride with little traffic in the way (a few pedestrians but not usually)
