Subject: Anyone here without a gallbladder??

Hi,

I'm new here and just introduced myself in the "introduce yourself" forum..

I signed up to do the 70.3 in Galveston next April and I'm very excited about getting ready, as this will be my first half.  Anyway, recently, I've been having weird symptoms that indicate that my gallbladder may be malfunctioning.  I've had sonogram which reveals no gallstones, and no sludge but now the doctor wants me to have a HIDA scan which will tell how well my gallbladder is ejecting bile.  If it is ejecting abnormally, they will want to take it out.  SO..if this is the case, I'm freaking out that this will interfere with my training and I will not be able to do the half in April..I was wondering if any of you here have had your gallbladder removed and if so, what your recovery was like, and when you were able to resume training.  I'm keeping my fingers crossed that it's not my gallbladder..I do not fit the typical gallbladder patient..I eat mostly unprocessed food, no fast food, not overweight, etc..Hopefully I'll know something in a few weeks. Thanks for any input about life without a gallbladder! I've heard terrible tales of chronic diarreah, etc..

Hill

The vast majority of people who have them out live a perfectly normal life.

If your HIDA is positive, you can always wait until after your race to have it removed if your symptoms are too bad.

Friend of mine just had his out and was back on the bike in 2.5 weeks. I told him there are easier ways to cut weight though. .

I had mine out about 9 years ago.  In a "normal" procedure they would make 4 small little incisions and take it out that way.  If it's normal like that then I would say the recovery time would be about 2-3 weeks.  Mine was partially normal.  3 of the incisions were about a half an inch long but the one incision in the middle of my stomach was more like 4 inches.  The only reason for that is because mine was gang green and it was extremely large so they had to make the whole bigger.  My recovery time was about 4 weeks.  Mainly because of cutting through the stomach muscles so sitting up or doing anything that involves your stomach muscles hurt.  Yours sounds like it would be a normal procedure.

I had mine removed in January, one week after my first Half Marathon. Was back to training in 2 weeks. 2 months later I ran my second half mary. It was a fairly simple process, a few small holes poked through and the doc had me done in 45 minutes. A couple of days of laying around the house, then a few of moving about carefully. I was back to work (in an office) after day 7, and all was fairly normal by week two.

Send me a PM if you want more details. I have to say I am very happy with the whole thing.

I had mine out last year, recovery was fairly quick.  The only thing you have to get used to really is adjusting your diet.  When I first got it out I found I couldn't eat like I did before or I'd be running to the bathroom every 10 minutes.  Its slowly gotten better and I'm pretty much back to "normal"

I had mine out in November. I was sick. The surgeon said I did not realize how sick. It took me a month to get energy back, and in January I started the c25k program. Ran my first 5k on April 4. First tri at the end of June. Second tomorrow. Third Labor Day weekend. Considering a half marathon in October. You get the picture. I am  new woman! Totally worth it and if it really is making you sick, you will find new energy you didn't know you had. Good luck!

I got mine taken out in October 2009.  I was in pretty bad pain for the first week, but it got better after that.  I probably started back running about 3 weeks after surgery.  Adjusting my diet at first was the hardest part.  Now, I can eat pretty much the way I did before the surgery (for the most part, anyway).

FWIW, about 6 months before surgery my HIDA was negative and I didn't have gallstones either.  I eventually had an attack so bad that I wound up in the ER doubled over in pain that would not go away.  Surgery was a relief after that.  The surgeon said my gallbladder was pretty scarred and was not contracting by the time they took it out.

I had mine removed last year (June 2010).  I was sick, too, and was passing stones left and right.  It was an easy surgery, but I did have some complications.  Got home from the hospital and ended up getting violently ill.  Had to be admitted and doctor thinks he knicked my liver during surgery.  LOL  Stayed in the hospital an extra 4 days.  I started the Couch to 5k program 3 weeks after that, ran my first 5k in Sept., then started training for tris.

Had mine removed 3 years ago, spent 2 weeks in hospital afterwards due to getting jaundice (not sure this is the right word, but google translate told me so, so i'll use it).

After that i was up in a week or so. Can't say i've had any problems at all after the surgery, i eat what i used to eat before (unfortunately) and i REALLY REALLY don't miss the monthly huge pains when i had a stone or 2 totally disabling me in pain for a day or 2.

Thanks for all the responses! I'm feeling somewhat comforted that I will still be able to do the HIM in April..Hopefully I won't have 'months' of diarreah..would not want that on race day!!!

You'll learn really quickly what you can and cannot eat.  If you're worried about it, simpler is always better.  I started out really slowly after surgery - plain noodles or rice, plain baked chicken, applesauce, etc.  I'd add foods in slowly until I learned how my digestive system reacted. Now, I'm almost back to eating everything I did pre-surgery - spicy foods still cause a problem, so I mostly avoid them now.
