Sunny
Total Time = 1h 40m 15s
Overall Rank = 259/292
Age Group = 35-39
Age Group Rank = 17/20
Pre-race routine:

Had a bagel with PNB and a banana two hours before.....sipped water until race. Had not planned on it being completely dark up until about 15 min. before the swim.....other than that, all went well.
Event warmup:

Got in the ocean, ran in and out of the breakers to get my blood moving.
Swim
  • 15m 56s
  • 500 meters
  • 03m 11s / 100 meters
What would you do differently?:

Nothing, it felt great....the 1/4 mile run to T1 was uncomfortable in the deep sand by the volleyball courts....but otherwise, respectable swim.
Transition 1
  • 01m 44s
Comments:

Was clipped in and on my bike before I knew what had happened...felt great.
Bike
  • 45m 48s
  • 12.5 miles
  • 16.38 mile/hr
Comments:

Most happy with this part of my race.....surprised myself at my pace.In the words of every American cyclist in the last 8 years...it was epic. Happy with official results here, think the bike might eventually be my anchor leg....felt strong, could have gone for days.
What would you do differently?:

Get a road bike!
Transition 2
  • 01m 36s
Comments:

Felt wobbly!
What would you do differently?:

Not have my Yankz so tight.
Run
  • 37m 56s
  • 3.1 miles
  • 12m 14s  min/mile
Comments:

Felt heavy and awkward....was surprised how strange I felt. Did a lot of brick training, but couldn't get my groove in the race. 19/20 in my age group was a big let-down, will not be satisfied with this in the future....will really work to improve here.
What would you do differently?:

Stay on the bike....no, train more for the run.
Post race
Warm down:

Drank water, ate an orange, watched the awards.....I really want to get one, soon......

Event comments:

There was supposed to be tons of stuff to do after the race, but no one knew where to go....but overall a great job by GoTriSports and the town of Hilton Head.

Had a great time, a great first Triathlon, couldn't stop smiling (even smiling on my yucky run).

Overall: 222/292
Performance: Good
Suit: Shebeest tri-top/Trek shorts
Course: Choppy water, people seemed to stall at first, but pushed through and had a comfortable swim....didn't freak, was very comfortable. A bit disappointed in the race results, thought I did better here....but will strive to kick boo-tay in the future. Swim time included an endless run to T1 through deep volleyball court sand! Run was 1/4 mile.

Good job on your first tri! I know you've been waiting for it to come and working towards it for a while now. I think the first one's all about learning (well, most of them are, but especially the first) and knowing where you need work. Looks like you got that from it and you'll be able to adjust your training accordingly so you can keep improving. And smiling on the run? Even runners don't smile on the run!

Shannon, what an amazing accomplishment.  I hope you're still smiling about this achievement.  You did very well, especially considering it was your first triathlon.  By the way, no one likes that run in to T1.

What kind of bike are you riding?

You did that time on a mountain bike????? Girl, you'll be hanging with the superfast folks when you move to a road bike. I went about that speed on my road bike with aero bars. Gah.

VERY impressed. I was impressed before. Now I'm seriously, way super impressed.

Good Job!!! Great time for a first. I had a great race, and would have had my best (sprint race) time of the season, but rode and additional LAP on the bike (Grrrrrrrrr). Need to learn how to count...... Look forward to seeing ya and some other races in the future.

what chenryiv isnt telling you, is that even with the extra lap, he was the first one to finish out of our group. i think he was just showing off.

Great job. A friend did the spring version of this and is trying to get me to do it next spring. My only experience at that point will be three 400m pool sprints. Did you have much open water practice/experience? I'm worried about doing my first open water race in the ocean instead of a nice smooth lake.

Hey, I think you were up ahead of me, I turned to T2 and you kept going and I thought, damn, I am a lap faster than THAT guy? Funny.....okay, not for you. Congratulations on the great race. I'll be doing it again in the spring on a real bike and hopefully by then I'll be a better runner.
