Elite Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() [long and rambly] Saturday after my race I noticed a rather nasty angry red spot on my inner thigh, right near where my shorts grippers end...thought "hm, these shorts have never chafed me before and I didn't feel chafed...wierd." Got out of the shower and the red spot had gotten very knotlike, spread to a rash the size of my hand that was swollen and wierd looking, and there were white pus-filled (sorry, I know that's gross but there's no other way to put it) fangmarks in the middle of the hard knot. Ah, I think, I've been bitten by something. No biggie, it's the south, you get insect stings all the time (although I've never seen one quite like this). So the SO and I jump on our comfy bikes and hit the road for a 4 mile ride -- it's a mile to the tri shop and a place for lunch, so we figure why drive? And we took a detour to make it a few extra easy miles. Very short ride. I've done 2 tris before this one and never had muscle cramps or anything after, just a little nausea but no trouble getting on with the rest of my day. A quarter mile into the ride my calf starts cramping, by a half mile it won't work out and my SO says she can see it spasming. I make it 3 miles via detour to the shop, thinking, well I must've screwed up my hydration but damn I feel sick and bad...maybe I pushed too hard? I didn't FEEL like I had pushed all that hard on the race -- in fact, I felt great except for a bit of a cramp on the bike. Ate lunch and had a beer, felt marginally better but still really crappy, dizzy, lightheaded (felt this way before the beer, thank you), and various muscles just seizing up at random. But since it was post-race, I figured if i went to the immediate med they'd say, well, idiot, you just did a triathlon...do you expect to feel stellar? Took a nap during which my whole left side seized up. Then Sunday night I started getting sick. Bad sick. Worst abdominal pain I've ever felt, and it lasted and lasted and lasted. It's coming from my lower back which is all fubar'd and feels weak and painful and spazzy. Turns out my symptoms and bite pattern match exactly the black widow. I couldn't figure out where I would've encountered anything that bit me, and I really couldn't figure out how I didn't feel it. Well, you don't feel black widow bites, or if you do it's very minor (and I could easily have mistaken it for my shorts grippers pinching or pulling out a hair). I used the portajohn in the pitch dark before a lot of people had gotten to the race, so I was one of the first in the lovely dark "outhouse" that was parked near the woods that had been left there undisturbed at least over night, if not longer. So. There's my long and harrowing tale. And you know the upshot?? I am no longer afraid of black widows or brown recluses because they don't actually kill healthy adults (barring the odd severe allergic reaction, which I thankfully don't suffer from). It's inconvenient to be in so much pain, but now I know I didn't do it to myself during the race. I'm so happy that I didn't hurt myself in some mysterious way tri'ing that I want to dance -- I have been replaying the race over and over trying to figure out where I could've hurt my back so badly. Conversely, if it wasn't that, I was wondering if I had kidney stones because that's where the pain comes from, when it's not manifesting in my abdoment. I got a 5k PR and a PB race time with black widow neurotoxin racing thru my body. Now I can blame not going sub-1:30 on the spider! Woot! |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() As a total arachnaphobiac, that is an awful story. I don't think I'll ever use a portajohn again. Glad your o.k. While they don't kill, many people (even healthy people can have dramatic side effects that will knock them off their feet for weeks. Glad your sickness is over... |

Elite ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Glad you came through. I still wouldn't mess with brown recluses though... they don't kill healthy adults, but they can sure turn a healthy adult into a miserable one for months at a time. bts |

![]() | ![]() Both my eldest son and I have lyme disease. At first, we were both misdiagnosed as having a spider bite. Thankfully, we got a correct diagnosis in time and received the proper treatment. Spider bite rashes just raise a flag for me. Here's a picture of a lyme disease rash. |

Elite Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Oh yeah, I'm not exactly going to go out and poke at a brown recluse (I have never even seen one, and I'm one of those that doesn't kill spiders but removes them from the house to the outdoors). I'm not going to go seeking out a black widow either -- feeling like you've got kidney stones and appendicitis simultaneously is not what I consider the most fun I've ever had. ![]() Still, I guess what I mean is I've lost my deathly fear of them. I know they won't kill me. Portajohns, on the other hand..... |

Thanks for the link. |

Wife, Mother, Friend. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() It could of been living under your bike seat. Have you checked under there for more? glad you're better. My 9 year old is very, very afraid of them. |

New user![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I tore out my deck this weekend and came across three Black Widow's. What do you mean you don't feel them bite? That was a freaky story. I am glad you're o.k. will be checking lids from now on. My daughter had the same symptoms about a month ago. I have a pest service now. |

![]() | ![]() Good. I'm glad it you don't have lyme symptoms. Personally, I love spiders. Hate snakes, though. I once heard that a person will either love spiders and hate snakes, or hate spiders and love snakes. |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Dude, that's why I always carry a flashlight to tri's. At my last one, this past weekend, I hit the portajohn early, while it was still dark. I had the flashlight on and thought I saw something moving on the floor. It was a fairly large spider (half dollar size) slowly creeping towards my foot. Well, I squished it flat before he/she got any crazy ideas. It had red legs with yellow knots at each of the leg joints. It looked quite nasty. |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I'm scared to death of spiders, and found a black widow hanging out by our front porch the other day. Had hubby immediately kill the thing - we have a dog who likes to eat spiders and I didn't want her to think it was a snack! From the sound of your experience, I wouldn't want to be bitten by one of those!! |

And from now on, I will be carrying a flashlight with me to tris....and I probably will just risk missing the race meeting and dart back to my hotel room to pee. bigfish - what I'm reading says the actual action of a black widow biting you either does not hurt, or feels like a little pinprick. I should also point out that, while I am now rather cavalier about spiders biting me, widows and recluses are still extremely dangerous for children and the elderly. I shouldn't make light of it, because they are dangerous...I've just been fortunate enough to discover that they're not going to kill me. |

It is just scary that those little boogers are out there and can make you soooo sick. My brother in-law was bit by a brown recluse in the stomach!!! OUCH!!! This is gross, he picked at it and now has a big ol' pit in his stomach from the necrosis!! |

I still wouldn't mess with brown recluses though... they don't kill healthy adults, but they can sure turn a healthy adult into a miserable one for months at a time. bts Just before I met him, my ex had been in the hospital for a week because of a brown recluse bite during (or just prior to) a triahtlon (early 90s). He had to be put on an antibiotic drip because the exercise made the poison spread faster and farther (so he says). I am terrified of black widows. Where we used to live was relatively rural and we'd get them inside the house regularly. Once, I had to crawl under the house to turn off the water main, and cried the whole time I was under there. They were all over. Normally, though, I wasn't as afraid for myself as I was for my cat, who thinks spiders are a moving cat treat. I'm one of the people who traps bugs and lets them loose outside, but not black widows -- they get sucked up in the vacuum cleaner. |

Elite Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() madkat - 2005-09-13 1:27 PM I'm one of the people who traps bugs and lets them loose outside, but not black widows -- they get sucked up in the vacuum cleaner. The first time I ever saw a black widow was on some lawn bricks we bought a couple of years ago...creeped me out that she was on the bricks in my car. My SO (who grew up in a rural area where there were lots of the little buggers) killed her and then doused her little spider bits and egg sac with gasoline, and set it on fire. Twice. So I went to see a doctor this afternoon who told me I had gastrointeritis. Given that there's not a thing wrong with my guts, I'm unclear on how he came to this conclusion, and I certainly don't trust his judgement. He said that all toxic spider bites have necrosis at the bite site -- that is contrary to what I've read on http://www.ipm.ucdavis.edu/PMG/PESTNOTES/pn7442.html and the Mayo Clinic site, among others. Given that he didn't listen to a single word I said, I'm more inclined to trust the websites. :P So I don't know anymore. Maybe it wasn't a widow, maybe just something I'm highly allergic to. The symptoms match and the timeline matches...but of course there's no way to do a positive ID if I didn't see the event. And the doctor says it's gastrointeritis. :P People who know such things -- how come there's not a blood test for particular neurotoxins? Is it just really difficult to determine? Can you tell even if there is a neurotoxin at work with a blood test? |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Holy cow! I was in one of those porta-potties (the smelly not-so-clean one...oh wait...)! Hey, I once ate mercury! I shook down an old mercury thermometer (this was about 15 years ago) and popped it in my mouth....sucked it dry of any mercury and then took it out of my mouth...apparently when I shook it down, the tip snapped off....Went to the ER and they said that since I wasn't dead I would be fine.....just minor brain damage since...and very slow run times. Sorry to hear about your excitement. |

Woah. That's more excitement than anyone needs....glad you made it thru that little episode! I was one of the first people that I saw using the portajohns...wayyyy before that long line formed. Perhaps I should always perform the clearing-out-of-spiders service at races -- I did PR on that run, so it worked out for me. Thank goodness I run so slowly, or they'd start drug testing for spider venom...snake venom...radioactive bite induced superpowers......... FWIW, topical steroid cream is absolutely miraculous for healing bug bites. Yay for modern science. |
