Soapbox time:

I was watching Discovery channel this afternoon & there was this show on about competitive eating contests.  They kept referring to it as a SPORT and how the ATHLETES train for them.  How infuriating it was for me to watch it, yet I found myself unable to change the channel.  How DARE they call overeaters ATHLETES?????  And eating is NOT A SPORT........  My husband and I were discussing this, and he says that his thought is "if you don't lose weight, it's not exercise."  A sport involves exercise, doesn't it???  I personally don't like to be compared to someone that overeats for "sport".  I work hard for my accomplishments, sweating, training daily..... Drinking a gallon of water at breakfast "really fast" every morning to stretch my stomach out is NOT what I call training.... UGH.... I've never been so disgusted by anything in all my life.  Even thinking about it now makes my blood pressure sky-rocket!!!!

Ok, stepping off my soapbox now......

Personally I wouldn't get worked up about it if they ate hot dogs, hamburgers, and tacos and called them triathletes. You know what you do. You know what they do. What difference does it make what somebody else calls them? Just my opinion though, and I agree that it's not a sport and they're not athletes...

Find that amusing.  ESPN is a sports channel.  And at times they have those poker world championship or chess championship to show.  And also, is pool/billiard/snooker a sports?  People wear tux during their competition.  I think those contests are more like "games", and participants are "players", rather than "sports" and "athletes".

Unless you have the chance of visiting an orthopaedic surgeon, its not sport.

Defn of Sport from Wikipedia :

A sport consists of a physical activity or skill carried out with a recreational purpose: for competition, for self-enjoyment, to attain excellence, for the development of a skill, or some combination of these. A sport has physical activity, side by side competition, and a scoring system. The difference of purpose is what characterises sport, combined with the notion of individual (or team) skill or prowess.

But I also know that Poker and Pool and Chess are all considered sports, which just doesn't sit right with me.  I think the recreational purpose and skill part of the defn fits the poker chess and pool type games.

I totally agree with you Eating is a not a sport!  and seriously encouraging overeating today is just plain wrong!!

Oh yeah, now you're speaking my language (correct spelling and everything)!

Of course, this is coming from the girl who broke her foot both while playing volleyball and while skipping. Yup, not even a leisurely skip across campus as an undergrad could save Sunny from her clutzy, ooops, I mean "sporting" ways!!
