Does anyone have any idea why they have not opened registration for the 2012 Florida 70.3.  Have planned my vacation around it and was kind of curious if anyone knew what was happening?

i heard that 2011 was supposed to be the last year for this race since there was already a new race in miami.  but it does look like its up on the ironman site for May 20th.  i would imagine give it another month or two.

maybe email ironman see what they say, could be a good option. good luck, the run is....interesting.

My wife and I each emailed them and we both got the same response, "keep checking the website." It looks like in the past registration occured in November and December. If I hear anyhing I will be sure to post it here, after I get registered of course.

I think it is probably not feasible, due to time constraints (especially the kids' school schedule) but I was considering this one, too.  Is this an event for which I need to be online at the moment registration opens, to avoid being shut out due to sell out?

I'm considering this race for next year.  What's so "interesting" about the run?

Scott, I did this race this year (2011) and registered very close to the event.  Had no problem getting a spot.

The run is "interesting" as part of it you're running through... uh, let's call it an open field.  It's flat, but there isn't really much of a path.

All in all though, I loved the race.  It was bloody hot and a little hillier on the bike than expected, but extremely well organized and a fun one.

the race is actully quite good until you hit the run.  last year its changed slightly and there was shade, very little but it was there.

hope for an early wave start.

I had heard that they would be remodeling the Wilderness Area at Disney, with a complete tear down and rebuild. Because of this the race was supposed to be moved somewhere away from Disney for 2012.

Hope the real story comes out soon. I was planning to do this race too.

only hills i noticed on the bike were fairly small, never came out of the bars or the big ring.. but then again i live in TN which has a different geography than Tampa (which I lived in too).. The run is just hot.. period..

Did this race in 2010 and registered in March, so there was no need to be at the computer when registration opened that year either.

The date was on the Florida 70.3 homepage as May 20th but was taken off 1-2 weeks ago as far as I can tell.  Hope they dont move dates/location as I know a few people have already made travel/accommodation bookings for this event!

I love this course but as a former disney employee I may be a little biased!  The run in 2010 was very hot but heard they made some changes last year to add a little shade.

They actually added a lot of shade compared to previous years.  The second half of each of the 3 loops is in shade.  The run is not really that bad.  The first 1/2 of the loop can get hot but the second 1/2 is very nice.  Bike course is good as well with a few small hills to make things interesting.  Swim rocks.

I have done the race 2 years in a row as I live near the bike course.   The run this past year was much better.  There was still a portion that took you out through a field but it was shorter this year than last.  They replaced the section in that field with shade and pavement which made it much better.   It is a great race and great place to have it.  Was not aware of the post earlier about it possibly moving from Disney due to Ft Wilderness construction.   Will wait to hear that.  It is typically open up to a month before the event.

I'm waiting too and got the same response when I emailed Ironman. "Keep checking". It was open in June 2010 for the 2011 race. Like most of us in the thread, not worried about not getting in, just for season planning- want to make sure it's still going to happen. Ironman still has the May 20 date up but the race website took the May 20th date off.

As expected, this is a hot but flat race so anyone training anywhere but Florida will barely even notice the "hills".

Just recently emailed Ironman.  Couldn't get many details other than the event is happening and they were hoping to update details and open registration this month.

I got a similar response when I specifically asked a couple weeks ago if they were going to cancel the event. I hope it happens soon!

Rumor is it is going to be in Haines City.  About 20 minutes from Disney.

Well, now that I got into IMFL in Nov (volunteered this past race), I'm doing the Gulf Coast Tri in PCB the weekend before FL 70.3 instead.  Great chance to get first hand course experience at the same race site/hotel, swim and run course exactly (just one loop each instead of two) and a third of the bike course

I've been thinking about that. I'm still trying to work out the season. These two WTC races are on the list along with the Gulf Coast Race (mentioned above) and Amelia Man in Jacksonville in October. I have to pick two and plan the rest of the season from there. No IM for me this year.Cry
