Pre-race routine:

Decided on a whim to race as a training race. Only 3 weeks into training for an Oly and this is a long one with a 30 mile bike so I was just looking to post a solid training performance. Since I missed online registration, I was up at 4am to head to site with plenty of time to walk the 1/2 mile from parking & sign up with enough time to get ready. Grape Nuts at 4am w/coffee. Second coffee on drive down. Banana just before start.
Event warmup:

Checked gears on bike w/quick ride. Dropped chain! But no problems after. Couple of short bursts and re-checked gears. Short run with strides - decided to wear socks for race as toes were rubbing. Need new shoes! Few strokes swimming with wetsuit to test goggles. Good to go.

Comments:

Gu 15min before start. Sun glare was so bad I swam completely blind for first 600m. Started doubting myself early and tried to sight repeatedly with little luck. Believe I zig-zagged a bit a slowed a lot to try to get my bearings. After turn, I was out of glare and remembered from the start that return buoys were well-aligned to the finish, but either they shifted, or I zig-zagged some more on way back. Or, as was suggested to me, the course was long. In any case, I expected to be closer to a 1:35 pace. But, based on my AG rank, I fared pretty well. So, I'm happy with that given the conditions.
Transition 1
  • 01m 53s
Comments:

49th OA / 3rd AG. Great transition time considering I opted to put socks on. Very pleased.

Comments:

Gu 10 minutes in and 10 minutes before T2. Nuun in water bottles. I haven't ridden 30 miles at a shot in about 6 months. Plenty of winds and gusts. New fit helped me stay comfortable in aero thru the wind. I am stoked with this pace.
Transition 2
  • 01m
Comments:

40th OA / 6th AG. Solid transition time. Couple of turns entering finish and couldn't see the dismount line so I dismounted a bit early and ran thru the street in my socks. Not a big deal. Good T2 for me.
Run
  • 53m 11s
  • 6.21 miles
  • 08m 34s  min/mile
Comments:

End pace was right where I wanted to be. But, as I've been training on flat surfaces and getting faster, pace doesn't reveal that I walked a bit. Hoped to run it straight thru. Cramped a bit and took my reserve gel about mile 3. Only water until mile 5 when cramping came back and drank a Heed.
Post race
Warm down:

Orange slice, water, coke and 2 bowls of red beans and rice.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Didn't train for this distance.
