Some help please.  I'm a 5'9" 220lb clyde that is looking for my first wetsuit.  Being an average swimmer (750m in 15min) I'm trying to look through all the brands and designs and figure which on is going to fit better and offer improved position within the water with freedom of movement.

Really appreciate ideas and thoughts on what has worked for all of you.  Taking my big step in 2012 to full Iron Distance.  Trying to get the right gear.

Thanks everyone.

My height and weight are roughly the same as yours.  I have an XTerra Vortex full (size XL) that fits well.  The key with putting it on is taking a lot of time to get room around the shoulders (by pulling it up high and adjusting) and getting some water absorbed into it before the swim to get it to loosen up a bit.  A sleeveless would work well for limiting shoulder restriction (I also have a QR sleeveless John in XL), but chances are you'll be doing some cooler water races and you'll appreciate the warmth and buoyancy provided by the full sleeves.

I know that both DeSoto and Xterra have really good customer service.  I would e-mail them with your question and see what they suggest.

Big guy here and the Xterra worked great for me.  Good customer service too.  Sizing was right on target.

I have and use the lower end Quintana Roo Superfull in an XL-Short. Works fine for me, though it is a little long in the sleeves.

bought an Xterra for my full IM in 2011. Loved it.  The only issue is that it does seem to tear easier than other suits.  However, given the price and service it is still well worth it.  Never pay full price. Xterra is always on sale for 50% off or more.  And they have a great return policy.  I may buy a sleeveless next year - especially since they opened a store in Denver

Do a coupon search for Xterra..sometimes the ST for slow twitch or other sites get bigger discounts. Check ST and also google coupons and xterra.

I am 265 6'2" and I went with the QR Sleevless Ultrajohn XXL. Very pleased with it. Think I paid about $180 for it online.

x2 on the sleeveless QR UltraJohn.  I have both a full suit and a sleeveless and I wear the sleeveless whenever possible.  I've found that the lack of restriction more than makes up for any added buoyancy that I might get from the full.

FWIW, I'm 6'5", 250-ish right now.  I typically race in the 240 range.

Or don't get one. People get all hung up on not racing w/o one. To the point that they get all whiny when the water hits 82, & the option of wetsuits is gone. It's not necessary the way a bike or bike helmut are. You won't freeze to death, one will NEVER be required, even cheap ones are expensive, and if you plan to lose weight you'll be buying another one later in a different size. Just skip it. I've worn one exactly twice in about 3 yrs. The first time b/c it was my first open water race ever, and I thought I would freeze to death. I just didn't know any better, and would have been better off w/o one. I hated every second of wearing it. The second time I actually swam off course and ditched my wet suit w/ a coast guard boat at the end of the first lap on a course w/ 2 laps. The race was going VERY badly, and I had swam off course with the intention of quitting. I felt soooo much better the instant the wetsuit came off that I decided to finish the race.

For reference I've swam in water as cold as 62 degrees for up to 3 hours (longer open water stuff, not just Tri swims). You really aren't going to freeze, I promise. Especially if it's just for tris. You'll never even be in the water for 2 hours in a full IM. Starting out w/ just sprints you won't even be in the water 30 min. No matter how cold the water is, you can suck it up for 30 min.

Thanks for your post. I have really jumped head first into things. I decided to do a sprint tri in August. I went to the library and read a book to learn to swim. 3rd time in the water was a master swim class. 6th time in the water was my first tri 3 weeks later. I finished 7th of 7 in the clyds, 6 weeks later went to international distance and finished 4 of 8. Then went home and signed up for a 70.3. The problem is that the lack of experience means I don't know what to expect. The 70.3 is in fresh water in March (in Florida) and that seems like I'll be swimming around the icebergs. I hope to be out of the water in 35 minutes and have legitimately wondered if hypothermia is a possibility. I went in the gulf this week and it was 72 and quite comfortable once I was in. I'm not sure how cold it will get, but was leaning toward going without. I'm 6'5 275 lbs and can't help but think there are plenty of people out there that have lost enough weight to sell one used. Then I found a sleeveless scuba wet suit in my dad garage.  It's not ideal, but I'm just wanting to finish this one anyway. This has been my biggest concern, but you have put my mind at ease. The next step is planning hydration for my bike, I'm sure there is a different post for that.

I'd definitely want a wetsuit for Florida in March.  My experience was that wetsuit fit varies significantly from manufacturer to manufacturer.  I started with an Orca, the with a 2XU and finally found a Zoot fusion that fir perfectly.  Don't be afraid to kiss a few frogs before you find your princess.

There are pros and cons to a wetsuit which I think we can argue to death here. I have two, sleeveless and a full both of which are XL size(6'2" 220) and both fit well. I work at a trishop so I get to try on many and can say two things. They are an investment 5+ years if you treat them right and you pay for higher quality, more comfort. Try renting some this up coming season of different brands and models if possible , see which ones you like personally. As for wearing one overall, I'm about 15 sec about faster per 100 yards with mine, I've seen people pulled from IMAZ with hypothermia with wetsuits. Are you going to freeze without them? Freeze no, but get pulled from a race possible. Why chance it.
