My third sprint saw my first DNF. I trained hard for this one and was pumped and ready to go. It was very windy and the surf was 4-6 feet. I made the turn at the first buoy and could not find a stroke...any stroke. Every time I tried to settle into a stroke, a wave would break as I was taking a breath giving me a mouth full of water instead of air which or course threw off any stroke I was trying. The end result was that I found myself flailing in the water and unable to catch my breath. After 200 meters, I headed for shore and took my first DNF.

I don't know if you guys can relate to the extreme let down that comes with an experience like this. It's made even worse that this was the last race of the season and I can't rectify it until March. In all my years of different athletic events and competitions, falling short in a tri is by far the worst feeling and the most depressing. Gawd, I'm so pissed!!

DUDE, I can totally relate.  I went to the Chicago Marathon last Sunday PRIMED to run my first mary.  But when I hopped over the fence to get in with my pace group, I broke my foot.  I of course was in denial for a bit, telling my fellow BTers that I was fine.  Needless to say I didn't even get to START my race.....and I've been training for this marathon for 18 weeks.  And now, I can't even do ANYTHING b/c I can't walk.

It sucks and I totally know how you feel.

So here's what you do......you focus on the good stuff of the season, your accomplishments, the changes you've made.....and you get ready to kick butt early next season, since you KNOW you'll be stronger than everyone else.  And you get back in the water and make windy, high surf days your friend.....

Man don't feel bad. With surf 4'-6', I would be DNS (start)!

I'll take on 12"-18", but not 2+ feet! I've swallowed enough to know better

first, i sympathize. its really hard to not finish something we start, or not do as well as we know we could, when we've been working so hard for it. i know i would be mulling it over a lot between now and next year, but...

cathy is right. try and focus on the positive. this is a lifestyle, right? in doing a third race you are obviously committed to the lifestyle of training, racing, and staying healthy. one race can't make or break you! if you are having a hard time staying focused after this, find a late fall run that you can work towards to get you going again.

I agree with autumn. Use this to fuel the training all winter...nothing like that burn to push you further.

Look at it this way...At least you were out there Tri'ing.  How many people were comfortable at home on their sofa as you were out there being bashed around by waves.

I hope you heal fast, how terribly disappointing.  Take care of the foot, build big arms, maybe?

I bet you weren't alone with 2-4 ft. surf...Sorry that the season ended like that for you.  You'll be back out stronger than ever next year, I am sure.
