State of Confusion
Subject: Oooh my aching legs
Today I decided to take my 5 year old daughter along on a run to see how she would do, since she loves to ride her bike. I mapped a loop that goes 5-5.5 miles, with cut offs that shorten the loop to 4 miles and 3.5 miles. I am running a long and she is happy so when we make it to the 3.5 mile cut off I see she is doing great so I keep going then at the 4 mile cut off she is still doing good so I think to myself, "great I can get a decent run in today." Once we hit the point of no return she decides she is tired and starts whining to go home or lets go to the park etc. She slows down....way down (she has climbed a couple good hills for a 5 year old) and she won't keep up with me. The last mile or so of the run took FOREVER, and now my legs are screaming at me from running so slow. No amount of stretching is helping. I guess I need to medicate. Time for the motrin!

Good stuff for achy legs: ice bath! Fill your tub with cold water, add a bunch of ice and soak for 5 minutes. Alternatively, if you've got really cold tap water, run a hose over your legs for 5 minutes. It's a bit tortuous, but really good.

I take an ice bath after every long run (18+ miles), marathon, and did this weekend too. Its a little easier if you get in the cold water first then dump the ice on yourself.

Ice bath and Tylenol 8 hour!  Oh yeah- and a massage will help!

Good stuff. Makes perfect sense. I remember years ago when I was training for a marathon (that I did not do, due to breaking my ankle on a trail run), my running partner and I would stop at this river front park and hang off the docks into the river to "ice" our legs. Worked like a charm. Not sure why I hadn't remembered that!

Ice baths and no more slower-than-humanly-possible runs.
