Total Time = 2h 11m 59s
Overall Rank = 259/266
Age Group = Athena
Age Group Rank = 5/5
Pre-race routine:

Pumped up tires, laid everything out.
Event warmup:

Swam a few laps - found out we could do flip turns so I practiced a few.
Swim
  • 09m 42s
  • 437 yards
  • 02m 13s / 100 yards
Comments:

I thought my time was better than it turned out to be but I was pleased at the time.
Transition 1
  • 03m 20s
Comments:

My HR monitor says this took a long time, but there was also the run from the pool so my guess is the official number will look lower.
Bike
  • 52m 51s
  • 12.11 miles
  • 13.75 mile/hr
Comments:

MEH - FLAT TIRE! The time on my HRmonitor is another 10 minutes longer because I had to change that stupid front tire. It didn't go smoothly, I'm sure because I was trying to rush. But I entered the time the bike computer said because I am more interested in my own athletic performance than my ability to change a tire.
What would you do differently?:

Not rush the tire changing as much and not let it demoralize me quite as much....
Transition 2
  • 00m 30s
Comments:

No problem - since I don't use bike shoes this one is always really quick.
Run
  • 53m
  • 3.9 miles
  • 13m 35s  min/mile
Comments:

Better than I expected frankly. I was really down going into it because I knew that any chance of placing was lost due to the tire issue, but I just kept going and feel good about the overall result.
Post race
What limited your ability to perform faster:

a flat tire and the mental distraction of it afterward.

Event comments:

I'll do it again, just to prove that my bike time should be MUCH faster....

KITTY!  How CUTE!

The tire thing sucked, and I'm not good at changing them.  I was lucky in that this guy had made a bet (and lost) with some friends.  The price was he was riding a single speed, in a dress, and had to stop and help anyone who needed it.  He fixed it in no time.  I was ALMOST ready to give up and take a DNF.....

Anyway, now I know something I need to practice a bit...

I passed that guy on the swim, his name is Kevin and is the owner of Tribe Multisport, it's a tri shop on McDowell near Scottsdale Road.  He was in front of me on the swim, he's a great guy.  They have group rides, on Saturdays which is a good way to improve your bike handling shoes.  Girl, we got to get you clipped in, you'll be soooooo much faster.

Way to hang in there with the flat, I probably would have called it a day.

Hey, awesome time on your swim!!! That's really too bad about the flat, thought the speed looked a little low, that obviously explains it. At the very least, you got a good race in, the things that went wrong were beyond your control, and you are in excellent position for next season...what could be better!?!

Nice race....cool you were doing flip turns!!

Bummer about the flat tire....I think some practice tire changing is in order (me too).

Funny about the guy in the dress....glad Kevin lost the beat and helped you out. It might be fun for you to go on some of those bike rides with other Triathletes!!

Congrats on a solid race....enjoy the post race glow!

It was a close call - if he hadn't stopped I was really about ready to walk it in and call it a day.

Now I understand, though, why he was so very very fast at fixing it for me......Of course, what's even funnier is that that's where I took the bike and they were the ones that told me that I was probably going to need to replace that wheel....I guess I'll be seeing Kevin again soon to thank him....

I'm considering asking for shoes and pedals for christmas but I don't have a clue what to ask for...I don't know the first thing about it....

Bummer about the flat tire....I think some practice tire changing is in order (me too).

My husband's first comment was that after we replaced that wheel we should keep this one for tire changing practice....I'm beginning to think that is a REALLY good idea.....

Great race Rebecca, looked like you had a good time out there (excluding the flat tire).

About the shoes thing, when you take your bike back into Kevin ask him about shoes / pedals his very knowledgable and best of all he won't tray and sell you something you don't need.

Great race, congrats! Too funny about the guy in a dress.

The tire changing I think just takes practice. I am determined to have this 100% mastered by next season - I can do it but I am slow and still feel more comfortable following written directions which would not be very handy in a race!

Rebecca!

Congrats! That swim time is really great! But I can't believe that you got a flat!!! That really bites. I had one on a sprint a couple of years ago, and I couldn't believe it. And don't you just feel like... all of a sudden, you are Ms. Butterfingers??!?

Way to go!!!

Yep...that sure was Kevin...I should be seeing him really soon for my bike too, I'll let him know what a small world this is in case I see him before you do.  To bad we didn't get to meet...I was wearing my tri suit that I have in my avatar...did you see me?

Actually I did - you passed me on the run in both directions.  You were on your way out as I was heading back at one of the corners, but you were asking a gentleman on the sidelines about how far someone else was behind you.  Then you passed me on your way back.  (yes, i run really slow.)  Neither seemed like a particularly good time to strike up a conversation *grin*

Are you planning to do Anthem?  I'm sure we'll get the opportunity to meet eventually.

Heck, could be at Kevin's shop....I need a new front wheel and I'm thinking about asking "santa" for clipless pedals and shoes for christmas.....

Okay, about the guy in the dress ... I also saw a guy wearing a dress and ROLLERBLADES during the run leg. I think it was the same guy - anyone else know?

Also, does anyone know if there was a story behind the guy who was wearing fins during the swim? I got stuck behind him (he was swimming underwater) for about half-a-length. My husband commented that he had a very difficult time when he had to walk the length of the pool wearing the fins.

It was a fun race!

That's the nice guy who stopped and helped me!

And yes, he was also the one with the rollerskates.

Didn't see the guy with the fins though.....

Thanks - I was really curious when I saw the guy with the skates. I wonder how he managed the "off-road" sections - remember there was some dirt and I think some gravel sections in the run.

I also have a pic of the guy with the fins. I can't tell if its the same guy though.

Way to finish the race ... sometimes the hardest thing to do when something out of your control happens that lays waste to your pre-race expectations! You say it through, though, and its something you can build from in a future race.

Wonder what that guy would have won if the bet went his way?

Oh, Robin - are you the one who was joking about being on the roster as a Clyde? You were cracking me up! (She's actually rather petite - not anything close to being a Clyde - unlike me!) It really helped to relieve my pre-race jitters!

Thanks,
Susan
