Pre-race routine:

We arrived shortly after 9 am and picked up our race packets. There was some confusion about whether or not the kids had numbers for the kids' race, but we eventually straightened it out. Kids race was at 9:45, so we just walked around and looked for other BTers and tried to stretch a bit. We found Autumn and family and chatted a bit.
Event warmup:

Well, I had to run across the field to see the finish of the kid race, so that would be about it. Oh, we also had to run up over the hill to get to the 5k start as soon as the kid race ended, so that counts too. :)

Comments:

I really like trail running and should do more of it! It's much less boring to me than road or dreadmill running. I started out running with my husband who ran a pity mile with me before taking off. :) Then I fell into a group with two women both named Kate, and they were kind enough to encourage me along at a faster pace than what I would have done alone.

About half way through, I passed a guy that I remembered from last year's race. He and I traded spots back and forth for much of the race, and I think he eventually pulled away from me in the end. This year I passed him and never saw him again. woo hoo!

I finished this race about 3 minutes faster than last year, so that's good. My official time was actually 31:27, but I took off 7 seconds to compensate for the estimated time that elapsed before I crossed the start line. (This was not a chip timed event.)
What would you do differently?:

Nothing
Post race
Warm down:

Stretched a little and had a giant cinnamon roll. :) I have no shame.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

I could have warmed up a bit more so the legs weren't so cold at the start.

Event comments:

I really like this race and think it's a great family event. The kids had fun and liked their t-shirts. I will say they have to get it together with the post-race water availability, though. Both years they were pouring water from jugs into little paper cups and that's just not very efficient. It was difficult for the volunteers to keep up with the flood of racers finishing at nearly the same time. I'd recommend the water bottle route that is the norm at most races.

The concession table cinnamon roll was really good though. Yum.

Photo #1 is a downright frightening pic of me as I neared the finish. Scary. I must have been frightened by all the costumes, judging from my hair.

Photo #2 is the kids race (obviously). Runners #587 and #593 belong to me. :) Our third kid runner wasn't in any of the pictures, unfortunately.

Thanks Denise. I thought I had missed you, but then I looked at your log and saw that you weren't there, so I went back and changed my race report because I didn't want to look like a dork for looking for someone who wasn't even there. Too late! You read it before I changed it.

Kelly, I like the pictures! Nice race report - it's good to be able to remember someone you raced next to before...and then taking off!

It sounds like EVERYONE in your family is active and running - that's awesome!

i LOVE that picture! the cinnamon rolls were more like cinnamon-loaves-of-bread-smothered-in-frosting. hee hee. i really like this event too. of course, the fact that my kids have won best costume two years running doesn't make me biased at all you had a FABULOUS run, kelly. so many times i've heard you pine about running faster, and here you beat my time from last year!

Do you know if those cinnamon rolls were catered by Lake Elmo Inn? You know, the breakfast place with lots of salt and pepper shakers? I remember they served awesome (and HUGE!) cinnamon rolls.. hmmm..

Those cin. rolls were insane - I almost grabbed one. But, my Friday weigh-in revealed that my Mexico biz trip added 5lbs to my normally svelte self so I skipped it!

Nice race...solid improvement in a year.

Excellent! In the top half--how'd that ever happen??

(Thanks for figuring it out for me, by the way. I was too lazy to do it. )

Thanks! Yes, the kids are pretty active and like to do kids races, so we try to get in at least a few each year.

Nice race Kelly...and nice pictures too! I love trail running, it seems you can go farther with less boredom. All running races should be in the woods!

Oh, and have cinnamon rolls at the finish too!
