I have only ran about six miles a fw times in my life. the sports I did never called for long distance running. The most I have done lately is about four miles and I walk some of that. I am wanting to build up my running for tris and I figured inthe off season i would domore running. I also have a goal to do a half marathon before April. Well, the race is this saturday. ANy tips or prescripitions for meds cause I am crazy????

WOW!! You'll do great.

Tips? Don't go out too fast and drink at the water stops.

I think I am meeting you and bear at the bank. Is this the same person from the Cajun Man thread??? I most likely will not be able to keep up with y'all but that is okay. I usually get distracted by the scencery, houses ect.

Don't worry you'll do fine. I am planning to do my first next spring. I like you have only done a few 4 mile runs with one or two 5 milers. You'll have no problem finishing, and don't worry about time. Trust me there will always be people finishing after you unless you walk the whole thing.

Good luck

Pace yourself, and break the race into 2 or 3 mile segments to help you psychologically.  Enjoy yourself and have a great race!

Race for fun, not to win, then you won't psych yourself out and blow it early.

I was just thinking ........ with all the racing I've done for school and on my own over the years, I've never actually raced a 10k! I've done more 5k's than I can count, and 5 milers for collegiate level races, and a marahton, but never a 10k by itself (I did do one in the Columbia Triathlon, but that doesn't count as a stand alone race). Guess I need to put that on my list of things to do!

Tara, you'll be fine, just treat is as another training run with just a marginal increase in distance. Couple of tips you may want to try:

  • Start off at a slower pace (as much as 30 seconds slower) than you think you can handle, at least for the first 2-3 miles. After that, you can give it whatever gas you have left.
  • Build in some walk breaks, maybe run six minutes and walk two, again for the first couple/three miles.

Most of all, have fun, make new friends out on the course, enjoy the sights and the party after. Don't worry at all about your finishing times, this is a very walker-friendly race and there will still be finishers coming in 1 1/2-hours or so after the start.

Good luck on the race....I agree on the not starting out too fast.  It's hard to keep it slow when everyone is sprinting at the starting line.  I think Bear nailed it above on his tips.  Have fun!

Get a training plan, stick to it so you can train smart and stay away from injuries. Listen to your body.... The key to endurance sports is to build up your training. Baby steps
I couldn't run 2 miles to save my life couple years ago.
November 2001 was my first 5K
Now when I run 10 miles I say "Today? not bad, I ran ONLY 10 miles" It is awesome to look back and see how much you have accomplished.
Where there is a will there is a way, you can do it
Good luck!

Great tips, y'all! Have fun, Tara. I'll be running my first 10K in December. Or maybe run/walking

Uh, her race is in two days. What kind of training plan would you suggest?

Oh Bear.... A 2 part question...
"I also have a goal to do a half marathon before April."
Your tips for the immediate race were great....
I decided to select part 2, I am a longer term kinda person....

The questions were for the 10K. The half-mary comment was just an aside. But thanks for playing.

Good for you! My longest race to date was last April, the 7 Mile Bridge Run. I'm like you ... I'd never done the distance and circumstances cut down my training. It was a beautiful day and I was surrounded by great people. Enjoyed the Florida Keys scenery, took some pictures of other runners ... . One of the best days of my life. Take the above to heart - pace yourself and enjoy. Then you can buckle down and train for the 1/2. Have a great time and best of luck! Then you can come down here and kick my b*t! in Miami in January!

What Bear said...on his first post. I have been doing 10k's before I could actually run. I would run/walk them and still do okay. Breathe easy and have fun!
