Pre-race routine:

Woke up at 6:00 (why am I doing this again?) and talked smack to Derek until we left the house at 7:00. Got to the race site way too early to register Derek and then we walked around City Park until race time. I realized pretty soon that my long-sleeve shirt was way too warm for the rapidly rising temperature. At least it was an Adidas Clima-Lite shirt, so I didn't smother. Thank goodness most of the course was shaded.
Event warmup:

Walking around with Derek, joking about how the old ladies were going to kick our asses. Laughing at the orange spray-painted t-shirts one couple was wearing a' la Katrina victims (Big X with the numbers of victims, etc.) Also loved the "F*ck Benson" and "New Orleans, Proud to Swim Home" t-shirts. Had a PowerGel Green Apple with caffiene (mainly because I was hungry)
Run
  • 38m 30s
  • 3.1 miles
  • 12m 25s  min/mile
Comments:

I ran fine. The only downside was I was so damn hot in that long-sleeve shirt! Halfway through the race, I considered stripping it off and running only in the sports bra. I reached down and still felt the jiggling (but shrinking!) belly and nixed that idea. The last half-mile, I kicked it up a notch, thinking about the Abita Beer I was about to partake in. I saw Derek waiting for me at the finish line. Thinking I am sprinting already, I hear him say, "Sprint, woman!" and I kicked it up a notch more.

What would you do differently?:

Not wear the damn long-sleeve shirt unless it is below freezing! Train longer, so at least I could make GOOD excuses why Derek beat me!
Post race
Warm down:

Half bottle of Gatorade, bowl of red beans and 2 cups of Abita Turbodog (ahhhh!)

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Nothing. I am right where I should be in my training.

Event comments:

This is my first 5k since February 2004 and first Post-Katrina race. I am proud of the last 2 weeks of training I have done in preparation for my half-marathon. One week ago, I couldn't run more than 2.5 miles without stopping to walk. I just have to keep reminding myself that I am a work in progress and most people were still in bed when I crossed the finish line. I am also lucky that I have a great husband to share this experience with, laugh about all our short-comings, and talk smack with(even though I knew he'd smoke me all along).

Good race, good to see you "back in the saddle"! Yes, it was nice running at 5am this morning but got fairly miserable hot when the sun came up.

Great job! You would have beat me, had I entered! And at least when you come in after him, the finish line is full of extra love and cheers!

I need to start looking at some 5ks to do before my 1/2 marathon. It would be good to have done at least one of something before then.
