Anyone going to Mardi Gras this coming year? I am a member of the Krewe of Endymion and it would be fun to see some tri people along the parade route. I am usually just a lurker on the forum, but I just placed my order for my beads and I am getting anxious about Mardi Gras.

Is the city really cutting it down to one week/end? I thought I read that in the Times Picayune when I was down there sometime.

If I go depends on my family, if they're going to be big into the celebration this year. I won't decide until much closer, just a couple weeks before.

No, they are making it 8 days long. It will be the 2 weekends with Thursday and Friday attached to the second weekend. I will post my float info for anyone who is going when I find out.

We'll likely make at least a parade or two if I'm working in New Orleans.  Should be interesting to see how it turns out.

Well, where my family lives (outside the city) they have risen dramatically because so many were displaced. My cousin got a LOT for her house, she moved into her dads (my uncles) and he moved to his houseboat...seriously.

All heresay, of course, but a lady who teaches with my wife just accepted a job in New Orleans. THEN she found out you can't rent an apartment for less than $2500/month, even on the westbank.

It actually hasn't risen as much as expected.  I just sold my house there and didn't make what I expected post-Katrina, but got what I was expecting pre-Katrina.  Rent prices are through the roof, but it is a buyer's market due to all the people that evacuated and found jobs elsewhere.  Unbelievable amount of homes for sale in the New Orleans are these days.

That's interesting. I would have expected the prices to drop like they did here after the earthquake in '94. So much for buying that investment property I guess.

I'm a conservative guy, and expect the R/E prices to drop going forward as more houses get repaired and put on the market. Would be hesitant to invest there as I (and many others) have serious doubts the city will ever be as populated as it once was. Lots of folks are saying no more than half the people.

I sold in late October and I got more than I had planned before the storm. I probably priced a little low but I wanted to find a buyer who would do all the repairs themselves. I still probably underpriced it a little, but no need to be greedy.

The rental market is horrendous. My company has been trying to secure rentals for employees and it just ridiculous. I fear the market will collapse if people don't go back and that hastened my move out of the city. I still miss my levee and Elmwood fitness center.

Hey I think I may have just participated in my first thread hijacking!

I was down in New Orleans about a month and a half ago. I drove past one of the warehouses that the Mardi Gras floats are stored at, and all the floats were outside. Most are tall enough that there was minimal damage (at least from what I saw). The floats were lined down the street and it was awesome to see them all out there. I've been to NOLA a handful of times, but never for Mardi Gras. I hope all of you that are going have a great time!!

I think Mardi Gras will be fine if the tourism industry can convince out-of-towners they will have a place to stay.  New Orleans is sunk...literally and financially, so Mardi Gras needs to do well this year.
As far as the real estate market, rentals and condos are through the roof.  There are 6 houses for sale on our street alone (that did NOT flood).  I think people are jacking up the prices on an average house, just because it didn't have water.  It's just not right.
