I HATE my job. I despise what I do!! However, they are paying for my PH.D which, when I finish, will get me pretty much whatever I want in regards to positions and jobs. Is it worth it? Days like today I wonder.

How long do you have to stay with the company after you get your PH.D? My company was willing to pay for part of school, but it wasn't worth being indebited to them.

I don't. I am academic advisor at the University, hence tuition remission. Don't mind working for the university, just hate the department I'm in. I'm just venting...

Well, stay until you're done if you can, then leave.

How about transferring to a different dept.? To me, this sounds like one of those jobs others dream of. Talking to college kids all day and going to classes for free...

I remember back to the day when I absolutely loved my job ... challenging, rewarding, intellectually stimulating, etc.  I loved it so much that I easily worked 80-90 hrs per week (taking Sundays off, so that ought to tell you the crazy hours) and traveled to 2-3 cities a week, 3 weeks out of the month.

My youngest (and only at the time) was just turning one. I had spent so much time on the road, that he started calling his grandfather (who lived nearby "Dada".

I realized then that while I loved my job, my family suffered for it.  I quit, changed vocations and went corporate ... and have been there for 5 yrs.

I say all that to say: your job is your job - it is not your life.  Make the most out of your job, but live your life.

If they are paying for your PhD, great ... work with it until you are able to reach your goal and find a better opportunity.  In the interim, though, use your frustration to "train angry"!

OK, glad to hear you're just venting because I'm thinking: you're studying for your PH.D and don't know the answer to this question? I like the "switch departments" suggestion. Good luck.
