I say there is no official time....  When you can do it, do it!

If you're "crazy", according to other "experts", you can do what I did and do it in your first season.

But seriously, one of the biggest considerations you have to make is how much time are you willing to put in.  I don't know how much training you did for your two sprints, but it would be safe to say that you would have to put in at least twice as many hours if you want to step up to an Ironman.

The point is that only you can answer the question of when.  There is no specific time that you are ready.  It's a matter of deciding on the race, commiting to it and training your *** off!!  Goodluck.

For me, I did a sprint in August of 2004 and three sprints last summer. This season I plan on doing a half IM in september. Last season I knew my endurance needed considerable work, so I have been trying to build that up for the past two months. As mentioned by others, just whenever you feel that you can put the time into training is when you can do the longer distance races.

I'm in my late 40's.  I did two sprints last season.  I plan on one or two oly's and a sprint this season.  If it all goes well, and I'm feeling good, I'll move to a HIM next season.

If that goes well, then the plan is for a IM in '08.

If I'm not feeling like moving to longer races, then I'll concentrate on getting faster in the Oly.

I did one last year, which was my first year. Prior to IMC I did a sprint and Half Iron.

Before that I had very little running or bikes and had swam a lap for close to 10 years.

Your results will vary, I finished in 12:30 hrs. Flated 3 times on the bike, had huge gut issues starting at mile 4 on the run and could not keep anything down till about mile 15 on the run.

I signed up the next day, to do it all over again! I'm thinking that knocking an hour off of my is possible with no flats on the bike and better run.

My boss had never really done a lot of tris and did IMWI in '04 and did it in 11:45.

He is a 3:00 marathoner though, so had a really good base to work from .......

I'm going from having done one Olympic length way back in '92 to doing a HIM this year and maybe an ultra distance in the Fall. I haven't swam since '92, so need to learn how to do it again (started in December). But once again, I have years of cycling road racing in my legs and a year of marathon training from last year, so maintaining an 8 - 10 hour training week is nothing new to me (well, sort of as I was out of endurance sports for 5 years completely).

Gordo recommends 2-5 years of consistent triathlon training in his book 'Going Long' before attempting IM. Of course it depends on your background. I will be attempting IM in '07 which will be year 3. This year marathon and half IM.

Like Rick mentioned, if you have a decent base in either running or cycling, you'll definitely be ahead of the game.  I did a 1/2 IM in my first year and a full IM in my second, but I have a huge cycling base (30 years) behind me.  Century rides to me are like 50 milers to a marjority of cyclists.  A lot depends on your overall fitness level, and how good you are at doing something aerobic for long periods of time.  I've done backpacking trips where I've hiked over several mountains, going from 5 AM until 8 PM.  Slow and steady, but grinding it out, just like an Ironman.  When you can convince your body that it can go the distance, and you follow up with good sound nutrition and hydration over the same time period, this type of cross training is good for your Ironman.

Hopefully, a year is enough (at least from Sprint to HIM)!

I'll let everyone know how it goes come August.

I think the depends on the individual. I did sprints my first year. Oly and a 1/2 IM my second year. This year I am attempting an IM. (We will see if I finish)

I know there are some people who make an IM their first race. It can be done, but again depends on the athlete.

i did two sprints and my first half-marathon in 2004. last year i did 2 indoor tris, a sprint, 2 long courses (each a hair short of oly distance), 1 oly, and 2 half-marathons. this year i'm doing my first 1/2 ironman. i still think i'm crazy for doing it. not sure that feeling ever goes away, no matter how many sprints and olys you've done. i'm sure the same goes for the jump from 1/2 IM to IM.
