Subject: 50K or Disneyland?
I've got a 50K scheduled for Saturday. I've been looking forward to it -- my first ultra. My first marathon was two months ago on Dec 4.

I've had some back problems and a cold that caused me to take off over 10 days this month, but I still got in a 20-miler two weeks ago. I'm not as prepared as I'd like to be for this race, but that's typical for me. Maybe I am well prepared because of all the rest I've gotten!

No problem, right? Do the race anyway. Then my girlfriend invites me to go with her to Disneyland this weekend. She supports my athletic goals, but has a conference in LA next week and is going down there this weekend to visit her daughter and son-in-law who both work at Disneyland and can get us in for free. She's also staying at the Disneyland Hotel. Even though we're saving money, I'd still be spending a lot to fly down there and forfeiting my race entry fee ($45).

What would you do? Would you stay home alone and do the 50K, or give up the race to go to Disneyland with your significant other?

If you're asking us I'm sure you know most of us are going to say race.  I suppose racing and then flying down to catch up is not an option.  I'm sure you'll feel like walking around Disneyland after doing the race, ha!

I vote race and ask for a raincheck, but if my s.o. felt the trip was important enough to ask me to skip the race I'd probably do what she wants.   How's that for a middle of the road answer?

You're asking us to decide which is more important to you, a race you've undertrained for, or a trip with your girlfirend? How have you been deciding when to go to the bathroom without asking us first?

Go to Disney and pick another race. Train to live, not live to train. If training and racing are the most important things in your life, don't have high expectations for the level of importance YOU will maintain in her life.....

Well if it were me and the race is close do it. You said it would cost a lot to fly down there.

Me: my races are my vacations and I like them that way. Training and racing is my life and I like it that way. Either she'll support it or not, whats more important to you? Is it worth the plane ticket and the cost of your first ultra? Will she break up with you if you dont go? If yes, you don't need to be with her anyway. Do you care about Disneyland? (me, I don't, but that doesn't matter) If you do want to go to disney, and if its one of those "important" relationship things to do, then you have to think about going.

There are a lot of questions you need to answer for yourself.

Also, I never cared about Disney that much so I ran a marathon there and now I've been. Easy. I don't want to be in that situation. I want someone who likes this stuff as much as I do (I know this isn't for everyone, some people want their tri habit to be theirs alone and that is fine, just stating my opinion).

Good luck. I'm interested to see how this goes.
