White Sands Missile Range, New Mexico

Bell Gym, White Sands Missile Range

Sunny
Total Time = 1h 17m 2s
Overall Rank = /
Age Group = Cldesdale
Age Group Rank = 1/10
Pre-race routine:

Woke p at 5 am and ate bowl of oatmeal and started drinking to hydrate.
Event warmup:

About 3 minutes light jogging then 10 minutes stretching.
Run
  • 24m 33s
  • 5 kms
  • 04m 55s  min/km
Comments:

I went out pretty fast for me, it mile 1 at 7:05 and started to sow it down a little to keep from blowing out. The sand put a real damper on the run and took a lot of energy to get through but fortunately the stretches were fairly short and there were only about 4 of them.
What would you do differently?:

Not sure I would do anything different. Maybe have gone out a little slower but don't know that it took anything out of me overall.
Transition 1
  • 01m
Comments:

I felt slower in transition than I actually was. I could have gone a little faster though, I knew I was loafing just a bit trying to get my breath to even out a bit more.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing
Bike
  • 51m 35s
  • 30 kms
  • 34.89 km/hr
Comments:

I was very happy with my bike. I wasn't faster than usual but I got a lot more for my effort. I set up my bike a little more aggressively and pushed the elbow pads out a little further to the ends of my bars. I have also been working of peddling at a higher cadence. I think the overall effect was to make by breathing easier and my speed was generated at lower power output. Once my legs get used to the slightly more aggressive riding angle I believe I’ll see some benefit in speed.
What would you do differently?:

Not a thing.
Post race
Warm down:

I did maybe 5 minutes of easy stretching, put away my gear, drank the rest of my Cytomax, had a hammer gel, some water and took a long hot shower in the gym. This is one of the major benefits of racing at the missile range – showers right at races end followed by a spaghetti lunch while you are waiting for the awards.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

The sand on the run slowed me down some but I've been pretty happy with my run splits. I think tey will get a little faster now that I am incorporating hill tempo runs. The limiter on the bike was the new, mre aggressive position but that is just going to be a matter of practice and I am no slower.

Event comments:

White Sands Missile Range always puts on a good race.
