Swim
Comments: I must say that my swim performance surprised me. I got some good clean water for a change, was able to swim my own race rather than thrash it out. This would have to be one of the best if not the best swim leg ever. (big call I know but it's true) - Oh but one thing that did hinder my performace but only slightly was that I got stung by a blue bottle across my face and left arm - not too bad and I didn't stop to pull it off it came off with my next stroke. What would you do differently?: Not much I can say that could be done better. I was very very pleased with the result. THe ony thing would be next time I wouldn't swim throuh the flock of blue bottles. Transition 1
Comments: awesome T1 - smooth as silk. Passed heaps of guys. What would you do differently?: Everything went like clock work. One of the best T1's ever. Bike
Comments: Pushed had on the bike. Real hard. I was worried I wasn't going to have enough for the run but thought... I'll worry about that when I get there. I was a little disappointed with my performance on the hills. But otherwise a great ride. What would you do differently?: Mental note to self. Resume Friday strength days. Three words Hills, Hills, Hills. Porbably drank too much as well. Guts were a bit sloshy when I started the run. Transition 2
Comments: What a way to ruin an awesome race so far. Ran straight past my rack and had to back track probably 10-15m's but otherwise racked the bike, shoes went of perfectly, hat on and powered off. Very disappointed. What would you do differently?: T2 at this event last year was bad as well. Next year my wife said she was going to get me a flourescent pink towel so I couldn't miss it. I think that'll be a great idea. Run
Comments: I ran the best I could. I didn't let T2 bother me, just put it out of my mind and got on with the job. Try to chase down the group that had come into T2 just before me but I had given them even more time making my job harder. Caught 3 guys but couldn't find anything more in the tank to get the other guys. What would you do differently?: Ran my butt off. My performance could not have been any better with what I had given on the bike. Post race
Warm down: Re-hydrated and grabbed some fruit. Caught a quick word with the winner (Boyd Conrick) - really nice guy. Kept moving and grabbed some ice packs for my calves (came prepared from home) What limited your ability to perform faster: T2 and that's about it, otherwise I reaped the rewards that were consistent with the amount of work I'd put in. Event comments: Absolutely awesome race, well organised, great atmosphere .... just unreal. Results are impressive (if I can say that).... 9th overall (390 athletes) 2nd AG (39 in AG) 6 mins faster than last year and I felt really competitive this year. Stayed with the lead bunch most of the racee and they were always in sight. I had an absolute ball, surprised myself and got a podium finish - like I said " What an awesome Sunday, why would you be doing anthing else but racing. " Last updated: 2006-02-19 12:00 AM

Very early start for my wife (but the usual time for me). Left home at around 4.30am to drive to the race. Got to the racel location at about 6.10. Registered and preped all my gear. After a quick check of all the equipment I racked the bike in transition and set up all me gear. Tried to take mental note of position on the rack (very very important thing to do)
Prior to racking my bike I took it for a scoot up the road, did a few short quick hard bursts and then got it into the right gear for getting out of T1 (little sharp steel hill just out of transition - catches heaps of people in the wrong gear). Pulled on the Kayano's and again went for a few short sharp sprints and a light jog.
Didn't really get a chance to get into the water for a swim warmup up but that didn't matter that much.
