Napa, CA, California
United States

Precipitation
Total Time = 4h 22m 57s
Overall Rank = 797/1438
Age Group = 45-49
Age Group Rank = 83/122
Pre-race routine:

Walk to the start from my hotel in driving rain....
Event warmup:

Trying to stay warm and dry in the driving rain.....forget it....
Run
  • 4h 20m
  • 26.2 miles
  • 09m 55s  min/mile
Comments:

Was doing fine till mile 20....my left hip flexor developed a problem where I had to run walk/run to ease the pain. Very bad, I just could not lift my left leg any more, even walking was painful... That went on for about 5 miles....all my other body parts held up, except this one....it cratered my finish time by about 20-25 minutes........I still shuffled/ran the last 2 miles to the finish, but I really wanted to walk...stiff upper lip thing ;-)
What would you do differently?:

More long run mileage is needed....I need to get over the 20 mile mark more often if I do this again. My longest run was 20+ miles, but most of my runs were sub 17 miles.....
Post race
Warm down:

Get into my wife's car as fast as I could, still raining hard and cold.....

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Long run mileage.....my cardio vascular health is excellent, I was never tired, or winded.... my biomechanics are mixed at best.....need to strengthen with more long running.....

Event comments:

Well organized, no complaints. 2,051 registered runners, only 1,438 finishers within the cut off 5.5 hrs

For someone who rated their performance as poor, you had a pretty nice finishing time.

I can't wait to read about your 2nd marathon. Now get training.

Hey Frank,Nice work - you are fast on the race report. If you finished in 4:20 under those conditions, you are forever my hero!!!I pretty much have the same analysis of my race - I need way more time in the 20 plus land to be able to keep a good pace all the way through. Maybe next year.Talk to you later, Congratulations on your great finish.Dennis

Dang! Nice time considering you feel like you didn't train enough for this run!!

Napa Valley, Silverado Trail - sounds very romantic. This race is on my Race Wishlist - would you recommend it?

Yeah, Frank. Nice finish time for a run with problems: hip pain and in the rain. It was also pretty cold. Your min/mile time would be a good 10k for me. Congrats on your first marathon and on getting into the longer distances. My HIM was easier than the marathon I did, just longer. But the marathon really beat me up. Running longer distances definitely helps, but takes a lot of commitment to take the time for the run and to recover, and then running takes over your schedule (that's what happened to me). I don't know if I could train for a marathon and tri's at the same time.

Anyway, good job. I look forward to seeing some more exciting performances from you this year.

Mike
