Total Time = 7h 26m 34s
Overall Rank = 1803/2032
Age Group = 30-34
Age Group Rank = 295/313
Pre-race routine:

I woke up at 3AM at the Oceanside Bestwestern. Ate a bagel with PB and had a cup of coffee. Did my morning thing. Felt nervous but excited since it was my first 1/2 and also I was undertrained. Got to the race side at around 4:30AM.
Event warmup:

I did not warm up. I was too cold. I was huddled under a tent because it was raining.
Swim
  • 45h 09m
  • 1155 yards
  • 3h 53m 47s / 100 yards
Comments:

I performed fairly well for not ever swimming 1.2 miles before and being under prepared. At 2:16 pace, several waves swallowed me up. I swam my race and stayed away from the bouys so probably swam a good 200m more than everyone else.

My wave gun started before I even got to the line. I was about 10m away but I guess I was too slow.

About 100m to finish, my left hamstring cramped up. Not sure if it was because I was undertrained or too cold. I was very worried though, I couldn't kick and had a bad feeling since it happened so early in the race.

One of the volunteers had to help me out of the water since I couldn't stand.
What would you do differently?:

Train harder and in the ocean more.
Transition 1
  • 07m 16s
Comments:

I was just glad to be out of the water. I had to use the bathroom and that was the first thing I did, before I even changed into the bike stuff. I pretty much took my time and just walked since my hamstring was having some discomfort.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing.
Bike
  • 3h 30m 36s
  • 56 miles
  • 15.95 mile/hr
Comments:

In the first 10-20 miles, I was averaging close to 20mph. I was feeling great. After one big brutal hill at going only 3mph, my legs were shot and after that, I was only averaging about 10-15mph for the rest of the course. There was quite a few rolling hills and I was just not prepared. I had only rode one 56 miler before.

My left hamstring cramped up again and my right quad also.

I had to use the bathroom a total of 4 times.
What would you do differently?:

Train more.
Transition 2
  • 05m 21s
Comments:

I was feeling ok after the ride. Actually I was surprised since I didn't really train for it. I took a gel and drank some gatorade. I did not change. Put on some sunblock since I knew I was in for a long run.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing.
Run
  • 2h 58m 13s
  • 13.1 miles
  • 13m 36s  min/mile
Comments:

I had only averaged a 15m/mile at the previous OLY so I shooting for that at the 1/2. I surprised myself with my pace. I had never ran or trained more than 6 miles before (the only time I ran 6 miles was at the previous OLY), so I wasn't sure what to expect after mile 6.

I used the walk/run method and and every mile, I went to the bathroom, drank and ate. At around mile 8, my legs were shot. I walked the last 3 miles, from mile 10-13. My hamstring was killing me. I knew I had to walk when I was jogging and couldn't catch people that were walking.
What would you do differently?:

Try to train.
Post race
Warm down:

Nothing. My legs were shot. My knees were sore and my hamstring was a little messed up. I even had problems riding the bike back to the car.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

I didn't train that much. My training was about 3 miles a week run, 10 miles a week bike, and I only started swim training about 1 month before the tri. I did two OW swims to prepare.

With full time work and law school at night, I just didn't have the time.

Event comments:

I really had fun. It was my first 1/2 ironman. I went in with the goal just to finish and that's what I did. I raced it well, and not pushed it too hard. I knew I was undertrained and I had in my mind, if I was too much in pain or discomfort, I would DNF and would be fine with it.

Course: It was raining and very cold. Weather.com said mid 40s was the low so I assume at 4:30, it was around then. Water temp had to be in the mid 50s. It was so cold the RD offered a 700m swim. The water was very cold. The RD had offered a 700m optional swim for people that thought they could not make the full swim in the 55 degree water and even said we could use swim booties. I didn't have a pair but I should have took the offer. About 3/10 of swim was in a protected harbor. Very good conditions (except for cold) until you broke out of it. I was scared once I got out of it but sucked it up.

Course: The course is decieving. In the first 10 or 15 miles, it is pretty fast and flat. After about the 28m or so, it was terrible. There was one brutal hill and several small ones. Also, the course had several rolling hills after mile 30 or so. Coming into t2, it had a pretty strong headwind.

Great job.  The conditions made it a very hard race.  You didn't mention the headwinds you faced after the hills that dropped everyone's speed on what it ssupposed to be an easy part of the course.

You had fun so you will definitely do another one and beat your time.  Congrats!

Thanks everyone.  I really did have a fun time.  Even though I walked my last 3 miles, it was so beautiful and I had such a great feeling of accomplishment during that walk.

Oh, here's the link to the results.

Great job toughening it out. Plus you didn't mention how you had to run through the sand for a portion of the run. The residents forced the changed because they didn't want to accomadate the race for one day out of the year.

I worked the first station on the run which was sponsered by San Diego Tri Club. It was awesome to watch you guys go by.  Keep up the good work, next time you will rock the thing with better training.

I will await your report.  You can give the bike course it's justice.

You guys were great.  Very lively bunch of people in your club.  Always gave me that extra kick into the miles of pavement.  And of course, that extra kick into the sand coming back.

One thing I noticed was this course has great volunteers and support.  I can't wait to do it next year.

Absolutely phenomenal that you completed the race with so little training! Awesome!
I trained all winter for this one doing 12 hours a week and the course definitely kicked my butt. Here it is midday Sunday and I'm still sore.

Way to suck it up through a hugely difficult swim (55 degrees? -- brr rabbit!) with less than optimal training.

Take it easy on the hamy, those take a while to heal and we are at the beginning of the season.
