Sunny
Total Time = 2h 33m
Overall Rank = 20/260
Age Group = 35-39
Age Group Rank = 1/20?
Pre-race routine:

Got into LH on TH night. Night before AJ, Sean and I went to Nick and Willy's for dinner (pizza and cola the night before a race is my long standing tradition). Also ate a pint of ben and jerry's ice cream. That's my idea of carbo load. Finished working at about 11PM and went to bed. Up at 5:15
Event warmup:

Rode to swim start at 6AM - was only 2 miles away. Saw the buoys on the beach and knew there was no way race was starting on time, so I chilled, kept warm etc. Then I ran about 13', and did some BMG warm ups. Stood in the cold water for about 15' to get used to it. Dunked my head under once. It was cold, not not the coldest I have been in and the water was clean and flat.
Swim
  • 33m 45s
  • 2500 yards
  • 01m 21s / 100 yards
Comments:

I am guessing the swim was long - AJ swam 2x1500 in the pool this week in under 20:00 - he came out in 31+.I hit the first buoy in the top 5, lost 3 of the studs and stayed on guy's feet. Drafted him to the bridge so I wouldn't have to look up. I could side site so I knew we were going straight. Got to the bridge and dropped my free ride, turned back and just drilled it back. About 500yds from swim finish, here comes my free ride again. I had to work hard to keep up this time.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing.
Transition 1
  • 00m
Comments:

T1 - uneventful - had to run 200 yds with bike, couldn't ride bike on dirt - it was deep sand anyway. Not a problem.
What would you do differently?:

nothing
Bike
  • 1h 09m
  • 24.85 miles
  • 21.61 mile/hr
Comments:

Rode strong. Wanted to average 240w for 20', then 250w for 20' then 260 for remaining. Once I hit the first set of hills, I knew that plan was out the window. I looked at about 22' and I was averaging 242w - so close to my goal. After that I was all about going as hard as I could maintain.
What would you do differently?:

Maybe back off a tad on the rollers.
Transition 2
  • 00m
Comments:

Across the sand again, same drill as always.
What would you do differently?:

nothing
Run
  • 42m 35s
  • 6.21 miles
  • 06m 52s  min/mile
Comments:

Ran hard. Cramped in the quads. Figured out how to manage it without stopping and went as hard as I could.
What would you do differently?:

Start out slower.
Post race
Warm down:

Cooled down in the lake. Soaked legs for 20'

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Bad bike pacing.

Event comments:

Race didn't start on time. Bad omen. Course was long. Bike was very slow with all the turns. No carpet over dirt section was bad idea. Volunteers (Boy Scouts) were not paying attention to what was going on. No gatorade on course until 1/2 way point. Waited for 3 hours, no awards. So - it's a 3/10 on my scale.

Great race Mike.  Nice running speed after the bike too!  Cramping in the quads...I had that at Lake Placid.  I chalked it up to forgetting my Endurolytes on the run.  And maybe your body wasn't totally adjusted to the heat index too!

Great race Mike!  Ah ha...so that's why you were offline this weekend.

Quite a few race reports are mentioning the lack of race organization.  I'm hoping the Tempe International race isn't as poorly organized, though it's put on by the same group.

I'm guessing you weren't going out to be a March champion, which makes me a little fearful for when you hit your stride  -- it's going to be awesome.

Ben n Jerrys -- the BEST way to carbo load.
