Some questions came up concerning the water temp for the race.  It got me curious so I dug into it.  I emailed the ashwabenon Directior of Aquitic Events (or some such title) and he responded with the following:

Ashwaubomay Lake is only heated by the sunlight.  The average temp really depends on the depth of the water and what the outside air temp is (usually about 3-5 degrees cooler then air).

and:

Ashwaubomay Lake is a 3 acre man-made lake.  The depth ranges from zero to about 16' underneath the diving platform.  The lake is feed by Village (soon to be City of Green Bay) tab water and is circulated by 8 aerators and treated by natural bacteria and enzymes.  We will probably begin filling the lake the first week of May.  Depending on the day's temperature and how winding it is...the lake is definitely comfortable to swim in.

So its almost half pool/half lake   Its temp starts in ealy may at ground water temp and since its so small it get to and stays near the air temp fairly quickly.

Also an aerial view of the park can be found here:

Wow, totally impressed.  Being from Green Bay, I have very vague memories of swimming in the lake as a child.  All I can remember is a lot of gritty sand.

Thanks for all of the temperature info!  Those were mainly my questions.  I guess there is no need to use a wetsuit for the Green Bay Tri.

Anyone doing the Green Bay Tri:

There will be a BT Cookout at my parent's house! There will be adult-type beverages (my father is an avid beer man- his fav- Old Peculiar)  and there is ALWAYS enough food!  More info as race day approaches!

I'm also planning on doing the GB Tri...

I spoke with Gloria West of Midwest Sports Evetns who is coordinating the race. Echoing the information already posted, she estimates that the water temperature will be in the area of 70 degrees. Plus - its just a sprint at 400 yards in the water, so no need for a wetsuit.

Now the swim for the High Cliff tri the following weekend is in Lake Winnebago, which will probably be on the cooler side.

Happy Training!

More info on the swim:

I saw on one of the posters at another of their events that the swim is 1/8 miles so I emailed them for some clarification.  She said that the distance timing mat to timing mat is 400 yards but because of the shallowness of some of the swim segment the actual swimming distance is caloser to 1/8 mile.

So basically water run, swim 200m, then run in the water some more... oh well...

Aqua running is supposed to be very good for you, and it is low impact!  This will still be a great event.  For some of us, it's our first, so the practice in the transitions is what counts- right?!?  It will be great!

This will be my first also and Im really looking forward to it. I guess our swim times will be a lot faster!  I just wanted a "full" swim leg.

If you are interested, there is always the High Cliff Tri the following week. I was out there for a training ride last night and found out that the first stretch on the bike is straight up a large hill to the top of the 'Cliff', which you also get to run up and down as well.

Well, I suppose we could all do both- GB Tri and HC Tri!  or maybe we could make an official BT - Green Bay Tri agreement and do the swim, turn around and do another swim, and then continue on our way!  I guess we'd have to turn around several times for a proper Sprint Swim, but that's ok!  Might confuse the officials a lot, but then maybe they'd lengthen the swim for next Summer!

Ok, this is a horrible idea, but it is funny for just a sec.

Isn't Lake Winnebago extremely shallow until halfway to the middle of the lake?  Will there be a lot of aqua running at HC Tri because of that?

I was planning on doing HC also, but found out that it was on the same weekend as the Menominee River Century Ride.  My parents and I do this every year, so I dont really want to skip it.  Kinduva yearly ritual.

Maybe instead of doing two laps on the swim we could all show up Sat night and dig some trenches under the water for us to swim in while everyone else is treading water.... ;-)  Nah, Im fine with a 200m swim.  Less water for me to almost choke on and swallow!

Hey all.  I drove the bike course today with my father.  This is my first tri so I'm not all too familiar with what is a "normal" course, but I do know the Green Bay area.  The road conditions are fare, and some areas are extremely littered with construction debrit and potholes.  A few of the back country roads have little to no shoulder, and many times it just crumbles into gravel and then to country ditch.  Granted, it is only May, and the triathlon is not for another month so much of this will probably be cleaned up.  There are three points where the course crosses a railroad and twice where you will need to cross a MAJOR intersection. The course is almost entirely flat.  There are a few inclines, but they are hardly noticeable.  The overland rd. straight-a-way is definitely the spot to drop the hammer.   I'm curious to see how the city handles the race being that the Bellin Run is the day before.  The Bellin Run is an extremely popular 10k running race.

They were filling the lake at the park; it was near to half-full when I visited today.  I took some pictures with the cell phone and I will try and post them.  It's definitely going to be a water run/swim/water run.  I forgot how small the lake actually is.

The run leg is COMPLETELY flat.  It seems a bit boring because it just heads right out of the park, past a few industrial type business, to the railroad museum, and straight back.  No turns, just out and back.

We're definitely going to be cooking out at the park or bringing it all back to my parent's home.  I'm doing this tri with my co-worker, and I have some friends coming to watch us. I'm positive they will be in the mood for some fun!  We should definitely plan either to cook out at the park- there are plenty of pavilions and grills on site.  If others are interested I can put a reservation on one of them.  Let me know what you all think!

I am TBD on the GB Tri as have had some health issues with my legs and my travelling schedule is completely out of whack. It will be a game day decision as to whether or not I can pull it off - very frustrating. If I am in town, I will at least attend for moral support to the others!

err...hope everything works out!  It would great to see you racing as opposed to jocktrapping, but I'll take all the support I can get!  I've been hving some nightmares due to my lack of training the last few weeks.......scary

  The road conditions are fare

You mean we are going to have to go through toll booths too?

Seriously, thanks for the pre-race report. This sounds like it is going to be a good first race of the season.

I'd be up for a little BT get-together, but I'm not just not sure of my schedule yet and if I'll have to fly out of there right away after the race.

No, actually I was just thinking about how nervous and undertrained I am.  I was hoping this was going to be this big glorious athletic feat, and now I'm just praying I don't turn into a pile of mush.  I've suckered three other girls into joining me-so at least I won't suffer alone.  There will be five of us total making the trip up to Green Bay.  Anymore word on cook-out and beer drinking afterwards?!?  Realizing now, this is a sprint and will probably finish quite early.

Do we know what they are planning for post race events?
