Subject: Average time to finish a sprint Triathlon
I'm new to BT and to triathlons (so new I'm not starting my training schedule until Monday). I was just wandering what the time frames are for people doing a triathlon? Just trying to get some idea of how long I can expect to be "putting out" for. How long would it take the first person to cross and how long would it take the last person to cross?

I am doing a sprint Tri the second week of June and would like to do one or two dry runs before that.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Jim

Sprints vary quite a bit in distance they aren't a standard distance...so it's hard to answer. I would go to your tri's website and look at last years results

Jim-

sprints vary in their length, so times will too.  A "sprint" is supposed to be something elites can do in under an hour, so the first accross the finish line will generally start there.  To find the spread of finishers, you should likely check the website for the race you're doing.  Races usually have the last year(s) time(s) up, so you can get an idea from that.  Otherwise, just figure out how long it takes you to do each leg, add them up, and there you go.

Sprints vary a lot in length, so there is no real average time. Maybe you should shoot for a mph average on the bike and minutes per mile running time. Doing this I'll say for someone middle of pack would average about 17.5 to 18.00 mph on the bike and run about 8 minute miles.

Depending on the exact distances and conditions for a sprint tri you'll see the really fast people come in just under an hour and you might see the people in the BOP (back of the pack) come in at about an hour and 40 minutes.  For your first tri though, who cares?   Just enjoy the event.  You only get to do your 1st triathlon once so make sure you have fun.  Good luck!!

Without any data in your logs it is hard to estimate.  Also, sprint distances can vary quite a bit so which race you are doing can make a difference.  Can you provide more info on your target race and current conditioning?

Middle-of-Packers can probably expect to finish most sprints in 1:15--1:40, depending upon course and distances, broken down about as follows

Swim: 500-600 yards @ 2:00 min/100 yd = 10--12 minutes
Bike: 10-15 miles @ 15 mph = 40--60 minutes
Run: 5K (3.1 miles) @ 10 min/mile = 31 minutes

Add a couple of minutes going from swim to bike and a couple more going from bike to run.

You might be faster, you might be slower for your first tri.

Thanks for the info. I know I asked a difficult question.

The sites don't have a history, so I think I will just go and do the best I can and try not to let EVERYONE pass me.

Cheers,

Jim

To sum it up "have fun" dont try to go out thinking you have to beat everybody, it wont happen. My first tri was a sprint I thought that I would finish in the top five of my age group based on the previous years times, NOT!!!! Train for your event and just remember this is your first. Triathlons can be fun, it is all in how you want it to be.

Searching any local races can give you an idea of the spread (although it can get obsesssional!)
To give you an idea of my first (and only) sprint, it was a 400m pool swim, 22k bike (hilly) and 5k run. Fastest 3 came in within an hour (just) and slowest between 2hr and 2hr 22 min. Middle of pack was about 1hr 25min. I came in at 1hr 33min and was 237th out of 315.

Have fun

the sprint he is talking about has the following dstances.

500m swim, 17km bike, 4 km run

I'll be doing it too!!

Here is a link to last years results.

The top finisher was 56:01, last finisher (where complete timing results are given) was 1:51:53.  I'm not going to worry about a time, I just wanna finish and get the first one of the season under my belt.   Jim, take a look at how the times are broken down and you'll see the average speeds of the racers, plus their transition times.  Its kinda neat to chceck out that info.  It also gives age groups so you can scope out your competiton.  Hope that helps,

Elly

I did my first sprint two years ago as a 50-year-old newbie in 2:02.  Went out way too fast on the swim and bike and crashed & burned during the run.  Had to do a lot of walking.  Wasn't DFL, but close to it.  My goal was to finish, and I did that.  Learned tons about triathlons during that first race.

Last year I did the same race in 1:30. The overall winner was at 0:56 and first place in my age group was around 1:12.  I was still in the bottom half of my age group but at least in the pack.  I had one bad race last year when I did a 2:05, but most of the time I was in the mid 1:40's.  Most of my improvement has come in swimming and cycling.  Running is still my curse.   My typical pattern last year was holding my own during the swim, passing some people on the bike, and then getting passed by more people during the run.

Depending... a 1/5 mile swim, 12 bike and 3.1 run -> winner - sub 1:00 hr, FOP - 1:00-1:15 hrs, MOP - 1:20-1:30 hrs, BOP - 1:40-2:00 hrs

Think of it as a "Race-for-one" (YOU). You cannot control who else shows up to race. Set some goals that will drive your training, and go race YOUR race. If YOUR GOAL is to finish in 1:30, and you do, call it a success even if you are DFL (dead *** last). If you go "race" other people, you'll end up thrashing through the swim and bike trying to keep up with people you know nothing about. That is a recipe for DNF (did not finish) or at least a very miserable race experience.
