Comments:

This run was a substitute for a half mile swim.
What would you do differently?:

My plan was for a strong swim, strong bike and survive the run. The swim was cancelled due to high seas and a small craft advisory. I haven't been running due to injury so I wasn't prepared. I should have run this slower to protect my strained hamstring and I might have had a better time with the second run.
Transition 1
  • 00m 52s
Comments:

I didn't rush, recovered a little from the run and headed out.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing, this was within my expectations.
Bike
  • 48m 18s

Comments:

This was a pretty good ride. I held 17-18 mph against the wind, 24-25 mph with it. there were 5 U-turns that slowed me down and I was stuck in a slow pack for the first mile. Somebody was violating the 15 second pass rule by about 165 seconds.
What would you do differently?:

Train harder.
Transition 2
  • 00m 53s
Comments:

Legs were tight and stiff so I took my time, but didn't waste much. I did run out with my helmet on and left it on the beach outside the transition area. That might have been a rule violation.
What would you do differently?:

Take off my helmet.
Run

  • 4 miles
  • 10m 53s  min/mile
Comments:

Hamstring problems held me back. The sand, and on the way back the slope of the beach, prevented me from dragging my injured leg to the finish like a have been doing.
What would you do differently?:

I can't do much about the running situation until I get healthy. I think I'm doing the right things to get there, but it takes time.
Post race
Warm down:

Went back up the beach to take pictures of abear2.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Injury and lack of conditioning.

Event comments:

Weather and change of events caused a late start. I did manage 2nd place in the Clydesdale Master's Division, making me the second fastest of the fat, old guys.

Course: This was run on the beach. Footing was less thean ideal in the softer sand, slightly firmer next to the water if you didn't mind a sidehill run. Out and back. I walked the last fifty yards through very soft sand to the transition area.

Great race, you beat me by two seconds.  Thats alright though...we'll see what happens next time.  That sand did make for a really though run.  Congrats on the medal.

Great race! I was signed up for this race last year, but it was cancelled b/c of Katrina.

How big were the waves? I hate when they cancel swims...

I heard the swells were 4' - 6'.   They were high enough to keep small craft out of the water.  In a masochistic kind of way I was a little disapointed that the swim was cancelled, even in those conditions.  I'm not that great a swimer, but it was only 800 yards.

The waves weren't too big, maybe three feet, but there was a small craft advisory and the rescue craft couldn't get out there. It seemed doable to me, I was deviously thinking some of the weaker swimmers might DNF, but I guess if I was thinking that then maybe it was too rough.

Good job on the race ... bummer about the cancalled swim when you have a bum wheel, but it looked like you had a hammering time on the ride.

Re: drafting - Was the race officiated? Did the drafter get nabbed?

It was officiated, and I talked to one of the leaders after the race who had a penalty assessed for riding to the left for too long, but I guess they didn't see this guy. I finally yelled "on your left" from the back of the pack and things started to clear up. This was into a stiff wind, and I think the guy kept thinking he was going to fly by the person on the right and just didn't have the power into the wind.

Actually, the course was pretty crowded and it was very difficult not to get too close sometimes, but the wind was really whipping around too much for drafting to make any difference.
