Basically there will be a lot of apps that are not compatible withthe fire.  Seems Amazon will control what can be published to the fire.

But why should a general user have to go through all that.  As a tech geek, I wouldn't have a problem doing that, but I would more likely buy a product that has what I want than buy a product that I will immediately want to root.

Amazon says that it can be rooted, and they expect some people to do it and they won't stop them. If you root the Fire, you can put the Kindle AND Nook apps on it, plus get rid of the Amazon version of Android, and install Honeycomb, which will give you access to the Android Marketplace, and a lot more apps. I have a Nook color and I put Honeycomb on it, then added the Nook and Kindle apps.

There is a reason why Samsung had to end up giving away their tablet with their TVs because they were collecting dust. Just as with the iPhone killers (there have been too many to count and all have failed), I will believe it when I see it. iOS > android OS Apple > the other companies.

They don't have to, but they can. I'm a tech geek, too, so I liked doing it. The problem is the products that have what you want cost more than $199.

I am still on the fence.  Mine is supposed to be delivered today, but I still haven't decided if I'm going to keep it or not.  I'd like a good web browser, and it sounds like Silk still has some issues.

Not sure if Amazon will have it in their market but when I had my Android tablet, I really liked the Dolphin browser - absolutely no issues with it over ~8 months of use.

I will take a look.

FWIW, I decided to try it out (posting from Fire now) because I can return within 30 days. The browser is faster than my iphone. Touch screen is a little strange, but I imagine I will get used to it. So far, seems like a good option for browsing the net and reading books. Will post more thoughts once I've used it for awhile.

Have mine now!!  So far so good!  Great size and the clarity on the screen works for me.

Need to give it a good test drive.  DH is getting an iPad through work, so I can see what/if I am missing something for the way I use the device.

Mine is languishing in Kentucky right now, for some reason. >:| I ordered right away when it was released...but flyover country is slow to get the ol' USPS service, I guess. :D
