Overall Rank = 93/94
Age Group = Athena
Age Group Rank = 2/2
Pre-race routine:

WW Bagel with a little butter during the drive. It was yummy. Unfortunately I realized about halfway there that the thing I forgot (because there always seems to be one) was my gatorade for the bike. I had about 16 oz of water and that was it.
Event warmup:

Isn't getting a wet suit on enough warmup?
Swim
  • 27m 30s
  • 1094 yards
  • 02m 31s / 100 yards
Comments:

I swear I may be the only person on the planet to swim SLOWER in a wetsuit.
What would you do differently?:

Train. I've got to stop taking my swimming for granted.
Transition 1
  • 05m 43s
Comments:

It seemed like a long way from the water to the transition area, in part because we had to make this very roundabout loop to get there....
What would you do differently?:

I need more practice getting in and out of the wetsuit
Bike
  • 1h 05m
  • 18.6 miles
  • 17.17 mile/hr
Comments:

I suck at hills. No really, suck BADLY at them. I'd be cruising along on the flats at 20+mph and the minute I hit a hill it would drop like a rock. I'm not good at shifting when I have to change gears in the front
What would you do differently?:

practice hills and shifting, and not forget my gatoraid.
Transition 2
  • 04m
Comments:

Good but slow. I didn't realize it took me that long.... Downed some clif shot blocks.
What would you do differently?:

Move faster.
Run
  • 53m 28s
  • 4 miles
  • 13m 22s  min/mile
Comments:

I walked a lot of it. My shin ached from the minute I started and my HR goes up too fast when I try to run uphill.
What would you do differently?:

Train more. A LOT more.
Post race
Warm down:

Walked around for a while, then Janel helped me stretch.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

My fat ass.

I had a mental hard time with this one.  The swim was slower than I swam last summer without a wet suit, which made me feel bad.  That's supposed to be my strong sport, but I'm starting to think my biking is better.  Until I hit a hill, of course, but those I was able to push through.

However I spent most of the run thinking "This is just proof that you're not REALLY an athlete.  You're just stubborn.  Why are you fooling yourself like this?  Why do you think you have even a chance of finishing IMAZ?"

I also went into it on almost no sleep.  Not sure why - my brain was just going a mile a minute last night...

Yikes! Sounds to me like you're being pretty hard on yourself. Looks like you had a decent race sport wise, just have to work on getting those transition times down.

CONGRATS on gettin' it done and keep up the good work!

Wait . . . you have one of these, and it's slowing you down? Well, leave it at T1 next time.

Hmmmmm . . . why does this make no sense to me? You're actually in the process of running a triathlon. I mean, you're actually out they're doing it. And while you're running the triathlon you're thinking to yourself that you're not an athlete?

Hell--O!

Girl, please!  You gonna make me slap you!!

You are most certainly an athlete!  NO MORE NEGATIVE TALK!!!!!! You are a work in progress, don't forget that.  What were you doing this time last year???  See, you are making great progress toward your goals.

You had a great race.  I'm worried about your shin, could it be time for new shoes?? Don't forget to ice!

You can most certainly do anything you put your mind to.  IMAZ is a long way off; focus on the now, train and stay positive.

Ahh, you said you were slow in the swim, I got a 5 minute headstart on you ladies and finished the swim in the middle of the ladies. Plus swimming in a wetsuit feels wierd, takes some getting used to. I am starting to feel used to it.

You did very good...now stop that negative talk...you are an athlete....one who will continue to get better and improve.

Just think how fast you'll be on the bike once hills get easier for you!

Can't wait to read your next RR and no negative talk....think of all you have done in the last year.....I look forward to watching you mature as an athlete and do IMAZ!

You are all correct.  That was an awful lot of negative self-talk.  I had a really good ride, despite the hills, and it can only get better as I get better at hills.  Same with the run; when you're this slow there's only one way to go.  And that was the 2nd time I was in a wet suit.  Ever.  So I'm sure that was part of the problem.  (I also don't have the "feet sinking" problem that others have - never really had a problem.  I can put my hands behind my head, cross my legs and still not sink.)

It's a new month and therefore a new opportunity.  I'm back on track eating-wise as of today.  I probably won't do anything too strenuous today; maybe a light bike ride or maybe taking Riley for a 3 mile walk or maybe just a nap.  We'll see.

A marathoner friend suggested that since I was such a very new runner when I started that I go back to a running store and get refit for sneakers.  My stride is almost certainly not the same as it was.  That makes good sense to me....I'll probably go toward the end of this week....

I'm actually more worried about the shoulder.  It still aches today.  My trainer is also a massage therapist and instead of strength today she gave me a massage.  She said my shoulder and lats were really tight, but the cause and effect are a smidge unclear.  We're going to add some strengthening and flexibility exercises for the shoulder to our routine and if it acts up again after my next swim (open water Thursday and pool Friday or Monday) I'll go see a doctor.  I want to make sure I catch it early.  It's not debilitating - more annoying right now - but it's best to catch these things before they GET debilitating....

My next race is may 21.  It's a smidge longer (1500m/40k/10k vs 1000m/29k/6.4k this weekend), 3 weeks away, but I was looking at the course and it's a little easier.  (they wove this one back and forth across bridges to create terrain, and the run involved a LONG slow uphill whereas the next one goes up the steep side and DOWN the long slow side; that should be better.)  If I focus on my running and a little hill work on the bike I'll be fine.  Water temp is predicted to  be between 76-80 degrees and it's already hitting 100 during the days here, so I'd bet on the later.  That will mean no wet suits, which is probably better for me anyway.

No hurting myself, no crazy schemes.  Just better nutrition and hydration and proper training for the next couple of weeks....

Race report is updated.  Apperently my estimated transitions weren't nearly as abysmal as I thought.  They lumped both into the bike and, while they were still high, they were FAR less than I had guessed.

I finished 2nd in my age group!  OK, out of 2, but still, I beat her on the bike.....Laughing

Congrats!

Your bike time looks pretty good to me.  I'm also finding that this biking technique thing takes a while.

I think you did great, you broke 3 hours. I'm impressed. As far as sleep, I ALWAYS have a hard time sleeping the night before a race - for me, that would be completely normal.
