Ok, so I just finished my first tri. Now I wanna run the Oly in September at Disney and maybe the marathon in January. Here's my question:

How do you hydrate on your long run (12-16 miles)?

Drive your route first and throw out water bottles? Run in circles to the same watering spot? Run with a hydration belt?

I love my fuel belt! Means I can carry a mix of gatorade and water, as well as gu if required and my iPod fits snug too. I pretty much do all my runs with a fuel belt because it holds my iPod so well.

Took a while to get used to, but it doesn't bother me anymore.

I also try to run where I know there'll be water taps. Not possible for everyone.

Fuel Belt - hands down. Though the elastics are a little clumsy to deal with and can be annoying.

Anything over 6-7 miles I take my fuel belt (not Fuel Belt brand).  I love it.  Makes carrying the cell phone easier too.  I just got it and it only took the first few miles of the first run to get used to it.

When I have trained... and I am going to run over 2-3 miles... I just wear my CamelBack. It works great.

On longer runs I carry a amphipod. It's like a small fanny pack with a bottle holder.

I love the amphipod too; I think it's a much better design than the elastic holsters fuel belt uses. These are actually plastic clips that the bottle snap in.

I go by time... if my run will be less than 60 min I only drink 20-24 oz of sports drink 1-2 hrs before and that's about it. But if I'll run longer, I'll bring my fuel belt which is not the most comfortable thing to wear but it is better than not drinking If I am doing a brick longer than 20 min for the run I also bring the belt...

I have an amphipod multiple bottle holder like the one pictured above. I use that for my long runs. But I have also run in circles (about 3 miles) and come back to the same spot for hydration and fuel.

Good question!  I am just starting to increase my mileage so I was wondering the same thing.  I bought a water bottle belt at REI but I hate it.  It bounces at hits me in the back and butt so I don't use it.  My mom (who runs marathons) gave me some suggestions.  She plans her routes where she can get water at a drinking fountain (at a park) or a building (library, police station, etc.) or she will stash a water bottle along her route in a mailbox (either her's or a friend's).

So, with my mom's advice in mind, I planned my route accordingly this weekend.  My halfway mark was by the city recereation center so I could hit the drinking fountain - however, the building was locked (oops!).  Ah, but I had a Plan B - the library right next store.  Turns out their drinking fountain was broken!  I think I am going to try one of those amphipod belts!

For anything over 2 hours, I use my Camelbak. I eliminate as much air as possible to reduce sloshing and tighten the straps enough so it doesn't bounce all over the place. The straps don't have to be so tight that it's uncomfortable, either. It works for me, plus I consider it added resistance training.

For the past year or so, my wife has elected (it was her idea...) to ride her bike along side of me during my runs that go longer than 12 miles - carrying one bottle each of Cytomax and water.

A slow(er) pace for her, but it provided great conversation and sure helped me get through the 20 milers...

Which camel back? The hip mounted one?

I was looking at the FlashFlo 45 oz they have that is supposed to be for running. Looks pretty big, but it would be really nice to have that much water in the summer.

Nope. I've got a 72 oz backpack style one. It's pretty bare bones, just the bladder and 2 small pockets. I can't remember the model, but it's one of the "cycling" ones.
