Subject: Joining a Tri Club

I'm a lurker on the forums, and have been for a while. I've done a bunch of sprint and oly distance and 1 half distance event over the past 2 years.

I've decided that I want to join a tri club/team. The only 2 that I know in my area (Lowell) are TriFury and NEMultisport.

Now the decision of which one?

Would love to get peoples opinions on

a) joining a team/club

b) which one in the Lowell area

Thanks in advance!

Joe Pitkin

There are a few folks from NEMS here on BT, including Colin Cook who is head of the club. I've met Colin, and he's a great guy. Have no experience w/ the club however (geographic issues )

I just joined TriFury for the 2012 season. Since I did just join, I can't really give you any input, but they seem pretty organized. I can't wait for next season to get on a roll. This whole off season thing is killing me! :P

PM Colin here on BT. His screen name is PeakTriCoaching. Great guy!!!!!Very speedy too

I dont know much about TriFury but just came back from IMAZ and saw alot of TriFury people out on the course. It takes a lot of organization to get that many people to an IM across the country.

Good LucK!

There were over 20 TriFury athletes at IMAZ..they have a lot of organized training events On the Run here on BT is a member you could PM him..I went to an event of theirs once with Karen Smyers as the speaker..& a swim clinic with Bill Steele a total immersion swim coach who does stuff for/with them..I would suggest checking out event or   chatting with people from each-figure out the better fit for you?  geographically a little out of my area unfortunately..

More on Trifury - even though I am no longer doing triathlon.  They are a group with a wide range of members, from absolute beginner to multiple IMs to retired IMs.  Some are the forever BOP like  me, some qualify for Nationals.  They have organized group trainings/camps with coaches, or you can just get a few buddies together for some unstructural OWS.

One thing Id like to point out is members really take care of one another.  During one of the duathlons (run by a trifury member as RR), I crash from my bike and was sent to the hospital.  Members jumped in to help gather my stuffs, get my bike, drove my car away, inform my brother etc.  I was very impressed and was thankful for their help.

My turn. I have been a member of Trifury since 2004. Great group and one of the largest in New England, if not the largest. They welcome all abilities and have a variety of places to do group training. Some are more formal than others, so it can take a little getting used to.

There are group rides on Sat. AM all summer long, along with other people just setting up times and dates on their own. Please feel free to contact me if you are looking for more info.

Forgot to mention, one of our team mates is a race director and runs multiple races in the Lowell Tyngsboro area each year. One of my favorites of hers is the Spring Fling at the VoTech in the spring. Nice pool swim to start the year.

Thanks everyone!

Everyone that I've talked to has great things to say about trifury! My swim coach is also a member so she had some great advice/opinions on the club.

I'm going to be joining up soon!

I'm the secretary for NEMS, and we're a fun group. We only started last year, and are rapidly growing. We have a pretty decent contingent in the Boston area, but most people are in southern NH. I'm sure you've checked out our website, but if not, do so, and maybe come to the indoor TT that we're hosting in January.
