davekeith - 2012-12-01 1:40 PM Started the USAT National Club Challenge today. Fun way to get motivated in the pre-season. Since I swam early and logged my yards right away, I was briefly #2 in the country. That didn't last long.

You can follow along or join in here: http://www.race-tracker.net/usat/

Thiscould be your claim to fame! We have some really short sprint type races here in the early season. I might try some this year just for fun and motivation. Have you worked out your 2013 race schedule?

JOHANNE -

I'm sure this is hardly original, but it just came to me, anyhow:

The only thing that should ever be carved-in-stone is words and names and dates on a gravestone.   I just say that in defense of our inability to plan a trip (a) first time around, and (b) that doesn't involve countless false starts, backsliding, and abject logistical collapses/implosions.  That is, nothing ever seems carved-in-stone for us trip-wise!

But!  We may be settled (hahahahahahahahahahah??) on a schemata now!  That would have us around the Bay Area Monday and Tuesday, and maybe Sunday afternoon, as in 10-11-maybe 9.  Now, the HOW of how all that is structured is kinda dicey (amoebic?), so stay tuned for details (i.e., watch for unravelings.  wheeeeee!)

I'm going to be out of town 12/9-12. I know my plans won't change but I know yours are more fluid

Let me know if you'll be in my area before the 9th or after the 12th.

Happy travels!

Johanne

JFrownHANNE -

SCry sad!

As it stands, we will be in Nevada City from evening of the 7th through Sunday afternoon, and then to Bay Area through Tuesady, then to Monterey and environs on Wednesday.  We have to be in L.A. by 6 p.m. on Thursday, so.............

Will you be back sometime on the 12th, as in the evening, maybe?  That might work, otherwise it can maybe wait until later in the winter (possibility) or April/May.

Waaaaaahhhhh?

GEORGE -

Very mixed reports from you.  On the down side is the "nuisance health issue" and the shoulder, but on the plus side are the 34' for the 5km Santa and the whopping 9" off your previous 300m time.  That's a very large slice, and even though you sound skeptical about breaking 2:00/100, those 22" might come off much more quickly than you imagine!

As for the shoulder....how is it now?  You mention deltoid, so I will ask how you manage lifting that arm above your head as you would to put on a buttonless shirt?  let me know, okay?  i'm asking becasue shoulder impingements often register as deltoid pain, even though that is usually less bothesome than pain at the top of the shoulder.  Give me a description of what you're feeling, okay?

It's been a lousy week of raw weather, but the next few days will be peachy.  The nicest of those, though, is Tuesday -- just when we will be driving to Syracuse so as to fly to California until the 16th.  Nice to escaspe winter........but it also makes it a big old come-down to come back to.  But really --- should i be complaining?!?

My other issue has been waves of nausea for almost two weeks.  The funny thing was I went to bed Friday with nausea and woke up Saturday with a sore shoulder but no nausea (so far).

As for the shoulder, It has progressed to "frozen" overnight.  I can't flex or abduct my left shldr and my extension is only a little better.  Yesterday the whole shldr complex was sore with some sharpness to it as well.  Today even my clavicle is aching like it is dislocated and needs to be "manipulated" but the main pain seems to be more in the bicipital tendon.  Kind of a whole mixed bag.  Just now its not hurting but if I move it I get an instant sharp jab.  I didn't think I was pushing myself so hard in the pool but I can't imagine what else I might have done to it.

I need to deal with this fairly quickly.  I don't want a truly frozen shldr.  I'll probably pass on swimming tomorrow but I don't want to stop for long.

We've been having a really mild November and start to December so far.  Not much snow either.  I actually like snow I just wish "they" could make it not land on the roads and sidewalks.  What I love the very most about winter is a full moon on a clear cold night.  Every winter up north I'd look forward to the full moon nights.

GEORGE -

I'm just heading off, but for now:  look up shoulder impingement, and also read about the acromium arch.   (Spelling on acromium might not be right, but it'll show up, correctly spelled, on any illustration of a shoulder.)

My impingement has discomfort all over the place, although usaully not all at once.  It could be top, or the clavicle, or the scapula, or the deltoid and down towards the elbow.  It was a regular "fun house of horrors".  Consistent was the discomfort when lifting the arm up, as it putting on a buttonless shirt; and, of course, freestyle was out of the question.

Gotta go, see you later!

Oh, just as I was gearing up for a big swim month, I felt a shoulder pain on Saturday at Masters. I checked with our coach guy, and he thinks it's tendonitis of proximal long tendon of the bicep. The prescription seems to be rest and ice for the time being. So maybe I'll stick with the bike - particularly since the weather seems to be cooperating - and see what happens.

JOHANNE - Maybe PM me a number....just in case our plans shift again??

Mighty Mojos

Well, Steve warned me about trail running and the risk of injury but ...

All was going well as I ran on trails covered with wet leaves until I came to two logs that had fallen across the trail. I cleared the first and rolled my ankle after the second. There was a sickening pop and then numbness followed by pain. I wasn't sure what would happen when I tried to put weight back on, but I was able to walk out. I felt ok enough to try to jog a little but it was pretty painful so I walked.

I went home and immediately iced it and took some advil and tylenol. I wore tight socks to bed to try to prevent swelling. I woke up this morning and figured my ankle would be huge and purple. It is swollen but not too badly. The pain is minimal but don't think I'll go running tonight. I rode a stationary bike and was ok. I have a 5k race on Sunday afternoon so looks like I may be fine by then. Dodged a bullet.

You and ANNE and maybe TRINA need to set up a support group for recalcitrant trail runners!  Anyhow, I am relieved that it has seemed to have gotten much better and that you are still eyeing the 5km tomorrow.  Can't let Doug the Lesser steal some points from a sidelined Doug the Greater, now, can we?

Have a good 'un tomorrow!

Hmmm.  Can't help but notice that there is nothing recent from either of you, so I hope training (TAPERING!!!!!) has finished well and that tomorrow will be a resounding success for you both.  It's 7:30 here, which would be 9:30 in The Big D, and that means that within 24 hours both of you will be en route to road-running glory.  Halleloo!

I'll be thinking of you two, and DOUG, from somewhere around Nevada City, CA, tomorrow.  Pace wisely!

Yes tapering-a very light week including last weekend when I did virtually nothing other than my little swim analysis. I have mostly beaten back that cold though this morning I am detecting a vague sense of "unwell". I got up to watch a local 5k-the Run Run Rudolf 5k in Sherman, chatted with some runners I know, felt a twinge of jealousy not running what is clearly a very fast course-several sub 20 runs from guys and one woman a little older than me. My female nemesis, the lady who has an annoying habit of passing me within the last 100 yards did under 21. But that was fun though I began to feel a chill-didn't quite dress right for standing around. The air is cool, mid 50's but moist making it seem cooler. We are staring down an artic cold front due Sunday afternoon.

Yesterday I got away from work and headed downtown for packet pickup-that saved me a  trip to Dallas today. It also confirmed my choice of taking the DART light rail from Plano to the start instead of parking in Dallas and driving myself out of Dallas when it is over. I assume Trina is staying downtown or near down town, she will have an easier time.

Forecast for the start time is 61 f, 96%  humidity rain chance 10%, winds S at 12

I am taking Monday off-it will be cold with possible snow flurries by then

Just dropped in to say I'm still here.  A pretty quiet week for me.  My shoulder has gone from zero ROM and a lot of pain to 100% back to normal in 5 days so I'm really pleased with that.

I resisted the temptation of going to the pool yesterday - I figured a couple extra days of healing wouldn't hurt.  I did go to my cycling/trainer class on Thursday without any troubles with the shoulder.  I do need to get back to working because I'm gaining weight everytime I eat a cookie or my own cooking.

Jeff and Trina - I hope you both have a good time tomorrow.

It wasn't my day, either. Don't know my exact finish time, but it's somewhere around 3:03:00, which is 3 minutes slower than Cowtown. Really disappointed, but not surprised. Just didn't feel good going into this race - some health issues that left me drained and necessitated antibiotics until Saturday, then a few of my usual race maladies - heat, humidity and hormones. Blah, blah, blah..

I like to follow negativity with something positive so I will say that I did have fun, the volunteers and spectators were awesome (especially in west Dallas), and my incredibly sweet and encouraging coach who ran the race with me is definitely a jewel. Oh, and my husband made it to the finish line on time to watch me finish!

Mojos,

Ran the last 5K of the season in my local road race series. No official results yet, but the important thing is that I finished the race after rolling my ankle last Monday.

Time wasn't too good. I hadn't run since the Monday I hurt the ankle. Took it out way too fast after the unintentional taper, then gasped and struggled the last 2.1 miles. It was 56 degrees and sprinkling so very humid, but nice for here in December.

Sounds like it was a hard run for many reasons.  Especially makes you wonder about your Garmin/Heart rate as well.  Maybe the high HR results were related to the pain you felt.  Also, if I saw anyone holding their left arm I'd ask if they're okay too.

Anytime I hear left arm, shldr, chest and jaw pain I worry about a person's heart.  Because it went away after you ate the pretzels does make it seem more electrolyte related.  It will be interesting to hear Steve's take on your run.  I'm sure he'll have some good wisdom and some of his own "bad day" experiences.

Its a shame you missed the snow.

Sorry about your tough day.  I can appreciate things just not coming together the way they're supposed to.  Three minutes slower isn't too bad a result - maybe just a bit more uphill than Cowtown?  Next year...

Good job on hanging in with your ankle complaining.  Considering you injured your ankle any finish is a good one.
