Extreme Veteran 444 North Brunswick, NJ | Subject: RE: Big Steve's Group (Year Two) - CLOSED Glad your ankle is better Michael! Got in a nice long 3,350 yard swim in this morning. It never ceases to amaze me how inconsiderate some folks can be. The Aquafit class in the pool starts @ 9. At 8:45 while I'm almost an hour in the elderly start filling up the pool and taking down the lane dividers. I'm in the last lane so I figure they would leave me alone for a bit until their class starts. Wrong.... It was still 5 to 9 and the instructor hadn't even shown up yet and with PLENTY of room to spread out across the entire pool they just have to make there way to the back. After 2 laps of zig zagging around them I got fed up and left 6 lengths short of my 2 mile goal for the morning. Really annoying. |

Really annoying. It sounds like you missed a great oppportunity to swim over a few people while practicing a mass OWS start. Sorry I've been away for awhile. Work got crazy hectic for a bit, and I put everything off. (I'm an accountant... the beggining of the year is always tough - but this year seemed much worse than usual.) I'm a little over a month into training for this year now. Haven't hit the pool nearly enough, especially considering my first ever HIM is less than 4 weeks away. I'm going into it under trained, but I'm using it as more of an experience standpoint than anything - in prep for IMAZ in November. Over the last month, I've also settled on a training program, I'm going to use Don Fink's "Be Iron Fit" 30 week "competitive" program. Not sure if anyone else in here has used it before - if so, I appreciate any input you can share. Also, as I love the BT training logs, I'm wondering if anyone has any experience in loading their own personal workouts into the planned calendar. I've not yet had any luck doing so. My Silver membership will expire next week, I'll renew if I need to in order to input my own workouts - but as I'm not going to use the BT plans... I'd rather save the funds for other stuff.... right now, a new bike computer (Garmin Edge 500) is tops on my list, as I don't anything right now.

Really annoying. It sounds like you missed a great oppportunity to swim over a few people while practicing a mass OWS start. LOL! Good point . Welcome back, I have several friends that are accountants and I know what this time of year is like. Most people dread April 15th but they can't wait for it. I love it for other reasons, its my daughter's birthday and the day they announce the Kona lottery spots. Fingers crossed! I don't know much about importing plans into BT, I mainly use TrainingPeaks but also log my workouts here because I think the reports are better here. Regarding the bike computer... I have the Garmin Edge 800 and totally love it. Awesome device. But had the Garmin 910xt been out I probably would have purchased that instead. The 910 is an awesome swim/bike/run watch and can easily be mounted to the bike just like the Edge. The 910 is around $400 so its more than the Edge 500 but something to consider. This sport is far from cheap!! I've been offline and didn't have a chance to start the totals thread.... Here are my numbers from last week. Extreme Veteran 444 North Brunswick, NJ | Subject: RE: Big Steve's Group (Year Two) - CLOSED No worries at all. I haven't had time to put together the summary this week anyway. Crazy busy with "life" stuff this week. Thats why I love training and racing.... hard to check email, voice-mail and texts
Speaking of training - had a great swim Time Trial today. After a 500 yard warm up swam 1000 to see what my T-Pace (time per 100) is. Its now 1:51 which is down from 2:00 in January so I guess I'm doing something right in the water. Yesterday while visiting my father in Florida got a chance to drive down to Delray Beach and see what a run in hot weather is going to be like for the race in a few weeks. Got in 7 miles in exactly 1 hr , 8:34 pace in 85* sun without a cloud in the sky. Tree's did provide some cover in many places along the route so that helped a bit. Road was totally flat so it wasn't too bad at all. Felt fine afterwards. Have a 4 and half hour brick to do tomorrow. Should be fun. Have a great training weekend everyone! |

My best time for a half was actually the first time I ever ran one (also Rutgers) finished in 1:55. I'm shooting for 1:50 but my coach thinks I can do 1:45 which would mean an 8:00 min/mile average. Gonna be tough! I hope its not going to be 87* like today. |

Extreme Veteran 444 North Brunswick, NJ | Subject: RE: Big Steve's Group (Year Two) - CLOSED Sorry folks, I'll start posting group summaries again tomorrow. This week has been nuts. Just woke up after a nap following the best half marathon ever! Finished the Unite Rutgers HM in 1:45:08 which is a PR for me by a little over 10 minutes. Everything just worked today. Weather was a perfect 52* with zero sun and from the get go I got in 6 miles each at 8:00 min or less. By then I just knew I could keep that pace till the end and I did. What an incredible feeling coming in 56th of 207 in my AG and 417 out of 2,667 total. My totals for the week.... S: |

Veteran 301 Smithfield, VA | Subject: RE: Big Steve's Group (Year Two) - CLOSED S: I can't believe I didn't run any this week. I keep checking my calendar thinking that I didn't log a workout somewhere, but numbers seem accurate. Time on the bike this week is a bit fuzzy. The timex that I use as a bike computer had lap data fill up on a century ride - shut itself off. I didn't notice until about 25 miles into the ride, and I didn't get a chance to stop and clear some old workouts until 40 miles in. Live and learn. Other things I learned for my HIM in 2 weeks: 1. My prefered water bottles don't stay in my new rear cages. They were flying all over the roadway at every bump. 2. I'm carrying too much fluid (and weight) on the bike. I'm going to ditch the 50oz speedfil for supported events and just use course provided water bottles during a race. I'll going to pick up some new botles (smaller) and not premix them (perpeteum) before I ride. Only 1 will be ready to go, the others will just have dry powder in them, which I can mix on the course at each water station. I may just put 3 scoops of perpeteum into a couple of ziplock bags and only carry 1 bottle. We shall see. 3. I'm not going to average 20 mph for 56 and survive the run. I'm kidding myself thinking I've got that kind of output in me today. Maybe I can get close to that in November (with an additional 25-30 pounds of weight off me), but it's not going to happen right now. Hope everyone else had a good week.

Thanks! It was one of those days where it all just came together. I'm not sure what they're officially called but most races have guys that are either carrying signs or balloons with a pace marked on them. Get behind the 8:00 min guy and don't lose him. That helped me in the NYC Marathon last year but I lost the guy while stopping for water @ the 10 mile mark. It was downhill from there for me but that's another story. Good luck! Doesn't look like they're too many folks left in the group posting weekly #'s so I guess there is no point to the summary. I would love to keep this going with the few we have left. Today is the Lottery drawing for the NYC Marathon. Fingers crossed to get in for the 3rd year in a row but if I don't I wouldn't mind raising money for charity so I'll go that route if I don't get in. |

I'm guilty of not posting my numbers just like others just a time thing. Hopefully people will start back once their seasons get into full swing and things get more settled down. Thanks for the advise, don't know if I can maintain 8 min. for HM, was thinking closer to 9 min. pace. |
