Subject: how do you train/race around vacations?
so, i'm a complete newbie, but i have decided, i think, to register for my first 2 sprints this summer. the only problem is i have two trips planned and i'm nervous about when i should race after them.

the first tri is easy, my trip is june 18-27 and the tri is july 17, i'm sure it won't be a big deal. but in august i'm going away for 5 days, and i'd really like to make it up to maine for a tri that i think i can drag my bro-in-law to that is 11 days later.

i know from what i've been reading that i should be tapering anyway, so maybe it would be better to just jump right in after vacation? the august trip, i'm sailing, so there's not much besides practicing some ows that i can do.

how do you guys plan vacations around your training? are there any tips for getting in your training while you're on dry land vacationing?

is it possibleto be addicted to this before you actually complete a tri? i think i'm getting obsessed.

thanks!
kim

I try my best to keep up my training during vacations. I'm going for a long weekend trip leaving tomorrow, and will be renting a road bike and swimming in a public pool. It depends on where you are in your training cycle, how important the target race is, the distance of the event, etc.

I made the mistake of doing my vacation first and my first Olympic during the last few days of it. Did the Disney/Sea World/Busch Gardens thing for 4 days before the race with little sleep in between. Had a 3 hour nap before plunging in the water.

I had the fmily in tow, a restless 18 month old and another 3 year old that joined us, leaving me no time to work out/taper, or anything else.

I'm doing it again next year but with the race first, vacation to follow.

I'm going away next week for 10 days. First, I plan on squeezing my Friday workout in on Thursday. Then, I plan on running the same Last, I'll try finding a gym and pay by the day to do some stationary biking and weight training. (Would be great to get a free pass or 2) Swimming will probably be difficult to do though I've already rearanged my workout plan so that week is a recovery week.

Edit: Anyone in the London area that can hook me up with a gym/pool?

Vacation? What is this thing you call...."Vacation"? I've never heard of such a thing!

Honestly, if I had vacation, I'd probably just run or swim a little.
A) I doubt your fitness will be severly hampered by the vacactions.
B) You're right, you should be tapering anyways, so I doub it's gonna be a huge issue.

But I may be wrong on these things.

As you get more into this life style vacations will cease to exist and will be replaced by many more 3 day weekend mini-trips to races near and far...it just happens...

I am heading to Maui in September for my sister's wedding and when she was scheduling I had her keep in mind a bike race and 5k that were going on during the week that my GF and I are going to be there...

Just goes with the territory...

What are you doing for vacation? You might be able to get some nice runs in, maybe even a swim or two. You could take or rent bikes.

Z1 and RPE2-4 are really aligned with most types of vacation activities. Swim out and ride the waves in? You'll get at least 50-100 yards per swim, maybe more. Do that a dozen times, and you've probably logged more than 1000 yards (and it doesn't feel like a workout until way later).

we're going up to san francisco for 9 days, doing some wine country and some sightseeing and hanging out with friends we have there. i know i'll be doing a ton of walking, and i can probably get a day at the ocean, and i'm thinking some biking around wine country would totally rock. the challenge for me is trying to include my hubby with all this. i'm sure i can get the time in but it won't be anywhere near the pace i'm supposed to be at. not that my training is insanely rigorous by any stretch, but it is probably more than he would want to do.

not sure what to do about the sailing, as i will be on a small boat in the ocean. i'm sure we'll land somewhere for a while, so i might be able to get a run in, but biking is probably out.

i'm guessing the general philosophy is just do what you can, and get back on track the next week...

For the most part I dont take longe vacations, usually just long weekends. Durring these breaks, I check out  before hand (online) on some good running locations. Just bring my running gear and run before she gets up or after she goes to sleep. I love running in new places. I haven't had the nerve to suggest a race while we go on vacation.....yet. Need to remember she is my biggest financial supporter in training and racing. Don't want to tick off the boss.

Try to schedule vacation weeks as your easy or recovery week.

Then try to do what you can while on vacation, and continue normal with the plan when you return.

Seems to work well.

Training in other locations can be fun too! A nice change at times.

Actually, I plan vacations around races, marathons mostly. Good way to see the country.

Swim next to the boat. Just make sure you have a life preserver handy, and watch out for sharks.

That's the beauty of going to Colorado for vacation. I'm doing a tri the day after I get back, so while I'm there I'm running and biking (taking my bike since I'm driving) and actually doing the Boulder bike/run thingy they do up there every week. And the place at which we stay every year has a pool.

Just like I did this past weekend.  I take my bike with me, and have my wife drop me off, 60 miles (or whatever) from our destination.  Then I ride the hilly route to meet her at the motel.  I get my workout, and she has the credit card...win / win situation for us both.

vacation? whatsis???

I usually go to MS to see family.  We usually run over the bridge and around while everyone is still in bed.  We take the kids to the pool and swim laps.  They like it because there's like, a 20 feet high diving board.   A pair of running shoes and swim stuff don't take much room.

and oh yeah I always scout the race schedule for the area so I dont' miss any opportuniites.

My body clock usually never adjusts to vacation time, so getting training in early in the morning makes it pretty easy to keep up with the regimen.  I do plan ahead when vacationing or going on business travel to identify pools, places to rent bikes, etc.

Vactions taken and planned in 2006:

Feb: Went to Tampa for a 1/2 marathon race

Mar: Went to Colorado for skiing ( swam and ran while I was there

Apr: Went to St. Pete for an oly race

May: Going to Seattle for a hilly century ride ( running and swimming too

June: Going to Texas for a 1/2 IM

September: Going to St. Louis for a 1/2 IM

October: Going to Hawaii for this little race.

So... all of my vacations except one have been to either go for a race, or go for training.  And on the ski trip ( which worked legs pretty good ) I found a pool to swim in and ran.

Unless you're on a boat ( ooops! ) you can bring a pair of shoes and run somewhere.  If you keep up some sort of activity level, you're not going to lose very much fitness, if any.  Structure your training schedule so that your rest week coincides with your vacationi.  That way, you'll have as little training to do as possible, and can enjoy the mental recovery that the vacation gives you.

I just returned from a vacation with my husband to celebrate our 20th wedding anniversary. We went to Greece stayed on a small boat, and rode bikes on a different island each days. I brought my running shoes and ran in Athens, once in the morning and once after a ride. I brought my wetsuit and swam too. I was able to get my strength training in at the hotel gym.  But clearly this is a vacation as a triathlete I thought would be great...my husband enjoyed it too.

When we go on family vacations, I have my coach put our travel days in as rest days. I always bring my running shoes and swimsuit and can find places for both. If I go for a longer time, I try to bring my bike.

This summer we will go to MN for three weeks and stay at my parents cabin with them (me and my 5 kids in 1000 sq foot cabin...cozy). I'll bring my tri gear. We picked when to go so  while there we can do a tri. that will be my brother, nephew's, son's first tri..and I hope my daughter will do it to.

Like many life changes when the bug gets you so where/what you do on vacation changes, and you find creative ways to workout no matter the situation.

You can figure it out...lots of great ideas here.

Depends on the length of the vacation for me. I do not consider my long weekends to go race a vacation. When I do take a vacation (3-7 days), I will throw in some running gear and swim gear. To be honest though, on my vacations, they rarely get used. You are not going to lose a whole lot by taking a week off, so enjoy yourself. If enjoying yourself coincides with a swim, bike, run, or exercise then that's a plus. However, I do not go overboard with the vacation and start looking to see how many pounds I can gain while not exercising. I usually try to put in a really hard week leading up to my vacation so it is easy to convince myself that I deserve the break!!!!
