Subject: Goggles leaking
So I am still pretty new to swimming with goggles. I have bought two pair so far, a pair of Speedo that were average priced and a nicer pair of TYR.The both leak a little, the TYR a little less than the Speedo. So the question is do all goggles leak? Or have I not found the right pair? Or could I be putting them on incorrectly? Thanks for any help!

Goggles are a very personal preference thing but you should be able to find a pair that don't leak for you but it may take some experimenting.  Things to try include tightening them or loosening them.  Do you have a pair with an adjustable nose piece - if so, you can experiment there too.  One thing that I find can really help is to relax your face muscles - the act of squinting can put creases around your eyes that breaks the seal and lets some water in.

I went through four different pairs including speedo and TYR before I found a pair of goggles that worked for the shape of my face.  Aqua Sphere Kayenne are the ones that eventually worked for me. They fit my face perfect and no leaks.  I think it's just trial and error unless somebody has any better ideas.

I went through a couple pair before I got one that came with several different sized nose pieces in the box allowing for adjustment.  That allowed me to dial them in and now I don't have any issues with leaking.  It's really trial and error, so keep trying.  I definitely wouldn't settle for something that "only leaks a little".  Get a good fit!

Try putting the staps higher on the back of your head.  Normally, a correctly put on google won't leak.

I agree that goggles are a personal preference, but they shouldn't leak, maybe a drop or two to get a good seal around your eyes. My technique when finding goggles was going to a store and physically trying them on before purchasing. I would not use the head strap but just press the goggles against my face. If they had a good stick/suction then I knew they would be pretty close in the pool with proper fitting. There are some out there that just don't fit my eye socket shape.

Hope that helps you fitting. I personally found that the Nike Reflex II fit best for me.

I had this problem for a while until I tried something counter-intuitive...I loosened them. Wearing my goggles too tight was breaking the seal. Once loosened, no more leak. Whala!

Just as not everyone's face is shaped the same, not every goggle will seal to every face.  My local tri shop has a bucket of goggles for you to try on before you buy.  You basically want one that can stay suctioned to you face without the straps.  I'd look for a tri shop or swim shop that will let you try out different pairs.

I used to have this problem all of the time and it would frustrate me as I got quite a collection of goggle - all of which leaked.  Then I tried the Aqua Sphere and from that day forward, I never had a leaky goggle issue again.  I found that the mask was also much more comfortable to wear for longer swims where the regular goggles were later begin to hurt my eye area.  Give Aqua Sphere a try.

I wear the TYR Nest Pro and recommend them to all of my athletes. I have NEVER had problems with them leaking and everyone who tries them seems to like them quite a bit. I'm not sure which TYR goggles you've tried and obviously everyone is different but it may be worth giving these a shot. They aren't always found in all stores but they can be easily ordered off the TYR website if you're interested. http://www.tyr.com/shop/nest-goggles-p-557-c-68_70.html

Goodluck...

Without using the straps, you should be able to press them in place and get a seal that will hold them in place for a little while. If you can't do this, then the goggles are not made for your face. This is the test to do before you buy a new type of goggle.

I have to admit that I've never done the goggle test...until yesterday. I think my goggles failed! I guess I should head back to the LSS and talk with them.

Everyone is saying that you need to find the goggles that fit your face.  That's really not the whole story.  HillSlugger was right about the goggle test.

The goggles must be able to stay put in your eye socket without the straps just by vacuum.  If they do that you can get a leak free fit and not need to wear the straps tight.

But that's not the whole story either.  The right goggles won't 'stick' if the nose spacing is wrong.  So there are 2 attributes that must be right:

1) goggle shape

2) nose width

Some goggles have a fixed nose width so they must simultaneously satisfy #1 and #2.  Other goggles have adjustable or interchangeable nose bridges.  If so, then #2 is a given and #1 is all that must be satisfied.

Then there's proper installation.  It's pretty obvious how to put them on and how to adjust the strap to keep them snug, but don't forget that every time you put them on your eyes you should give just a little push to burp the air out of them and create the suction.

I have tried about a dozen pair of goggles over the years and haven't really had a pair that wouldn't work without leaks if I got all of this right.  Now a diving start off the blocks is completely different.  That takes a seriously good fitting pair of goggles put on tight enough to tattoo your eye sockets, but that's not a problem many triathletes need to worry about.

Swedish goggles will never ever let you down.  They are cheap, indestructible, come in a zillion colors and don't leak.
