For the first time in a couple of years, I swam a continuous 500 yards in the pool this morning. Certainly not a big deal for those of you who probably wouldn't even feel warmed up after 500 yards, but a large undertaking for me.

I'm a bit of a lurker, and haven't participated in a triathlon since September 2009. My last open-water swim, like all those that preceded it, was a panic-filled misery that left me exhausted and defeated before ever getting on the bike. The desire to get back to triathlon has been nagging at me for a few months, though, and I started hanging around in the forums again last fall. I found myself gravitating to the "newbie swim breakthrough" threads, wondering if I could have one of them for myself.

The first trip to the pool was disastrous. I could barely do 2 x 25, fighting off panic all the while. The next time in, I managed 4 x 25 before panic set in. In the several days' respite following this, I spent more time here reading, soaking in the good vibes, still hoping that some of the mojo would rub off. The third trip, I got through 6 x 25, and I stopped even though I felt like I had more in the tank. This morning (now that all the New Year's optimists have apparently fled for another year), I kept going. 200 yards was the target, with the understanding that I'd keep going if I could. Past 300, then ... 400? Really? Full speed ahead, all the way to 500 yards. I'd have kept going, but I got off to a late start and had to scramble to make my train.

I'm sure my TI instructors would have had a cow if they had seen my bastardization of the efficient techniques I'd almost learned, but there were flashes. Moments of breathing-constricted panic, more moments of calm and something like a flow. All of this is, I guess, a long-winded expression of thanks to this community at BT. Several months of collateral encouragement paid off for me today, and I'd imagine any number of others are getting it, too.

Shorter version: Thanks, all!

That's great - congrats!  I'm right there with you.  I'm in my second week of swimming and did my first 100yds continuous today.  I've been doing about 30 laps per workout for the past two weeks, but I've been resting between every 25-yard lap pretty much.  I hope to get to 500 soon too.

Hey Tri Bob, way to go. Like you I've struggled with swimming any distance, a 100 yard swim and my heart was in zone 5+. Last week I decided to slow down and find a cadence I could stick with. My first session doing this I was able to go 300 yds, a couple of days later I set 400 for a goal, but I felt so (hmmm not great, but not overly tired either) so I kept going all the way to 600, and honestly I could've done more but just got a little bored. Like cycling, I'm finding a cadence I'm comfortable holding for awhile. I have a sprint tri coming up in March with a 300 yd swim and my confidence just got a big time boost with this breakthrough. Congrats again!!!!

Yes!

Sometimes doing the distance is the most important thing, completely trumping technique or pace or anything.

Way to go and congrats!

Fantastic!! I'm still at the 100 yard and rest stage. I have been at it for a few months and the thought of a continuous 500 yards seems miraculous.

Way to go,

Harold

Like a couple of others have mentioned, I can also totally relate.  I haven't made it to 500 continuous yet - I did 100 a couple weeks ago.  I usually swim 700-800 total in 50 yd sets and feel like I'm real close to making that 500+ continuous breakthrough.  Congratulations on a huge accomplishment - these posts are so encouraging.

Cheers!

James

Great job!!! I find swimming to be a little like running in the fact that once you break through the wall that prevents you from going continuously, you quickly gain confidence and endurance! Most people just don't make it that far and say that they are never going to be a swimmer or a runner and give up, but you kept going! Again way to go!!

Great job!  You will gain confidence and distance very quickly, and you are going to enjoy being back involved in the sport.  You'll be knocking on 1000 yards before you know it!  Enjoy it and let us know

Well, this thread has pretty much become a microcosm of the phenomenon I was describing. Again, many thanks, both for the incidental and the explicit encouragement.

And for all the fellow noobs struggling with me (well, figuratively, anyway), keep on truckin' because it does get better. Eventually.
