It is looking very possible that I may be moving to Quantico in the next couple of months.  I have heard that traffic is awful no matter what time of day.  Does anyone have any recommendations on places to live?  I'm not looking to buy a house, just rent for the time being.  Thanks.

I am too far south of Quantico to offer housing suggestions.(Richmond area)  Welcome to VA!

If you live close traffic is fine.

There are a lot of places very close to Quantico.  There are a ton of subdivisions along route 1 from the Dumfries exit on 95 to the Aquia/garrisonville exit.  All of those will be a very short commute to work.

Not sure on rentals I guess it would depend on how much you are looking to spend.

Now if you want to drive to DC/Northern Virginia from there depending on when you go traffic will suck.

One of my good friends lives in Woodbridge and has a "reverse commute" to Quantico.  From there it isn't too bad to get into the city on the weekends.   Plenty of housing communities along the I-95 corridor with access to anything and everything.  Good luck and welcome!

Will you be working on base, or nearby? It all depends on where you have to go. As others mentioned, reverse commute in the am from the north to Quantico is not as bad. Also, there is a commuter train that runs from Fredericksburg (south of Quantico). FBG has plenty of rentals and you could stay off the roads entirely.

And yes, traffic is hellish. If you have to drive, try to negotiate flex work hours in order to avoid anything that requires driving 6-9 am and 3-6 pm.

Live so you drive South in the morning and North in the evening and you'll not have an issue with commute.

What'cha doing in Quantico, if you don't mind?

Thanks everyone for the help.  My husband is a Marine so he is going to be getting stationed on Quantico next.  We would like to live on base, but there is a waiting list for a couple of months until a house becomes available.

We are trying to live as close as possible, he will have varying hours, so I don't know if traffic will always be a problem.  Are there any particular places to stay away from?  We get a housing allowance since we will be living off base, it will be a little over $1700+ but we would try and stay under that.  Any recommendations?  Also how much is gas out there right now?

Thanks

Lake Ridge (Woodbridge) is nice and has a lot of rental and military folk.  That would give you the reverse commute to Quant.

I dont think traffic is really "always" a prob, but that part of I95 is ugly a lot. I dont really know of areas to stay away from, but US-1 corridor in Woodbridge is a bit dingy/dumpy.

Gas seems to be varying wildly depending on day and location.  I see 20 cent/gal price differences on same day depending on where in Northern VA you are.

Best of luck to you and your husband and thanks for his service.

Gary

ooops - Gas prices are around $3.50 - at least thats what it was Monday.
