Comments: started at the back and ran into a number of people which then necessitated me stopping and treading water or breaststroking. Didn't bilateral breath but did go one side for 20 strokes and then the other. This probably works well What would you do differently?: maybe get a litte deeper into the pack with more confidence. Transition 1
Comments: transition was good for this. wore biking shorts which i had to put on whcih i can probably eliminate by using tri shorts. liked wearing the gloves use them to wipe my nose, which ran a lot. What would you do differently?: just wear the tri shorts, maybe try the shoes locked into the bike Bike
Comments: lost my chain trying to switch to the large sprocket while pedaling quickly. felt really good on the bike, was able to pass a lot of participants and while my run wasnt that great didn't feel like the bike took it out of me. Almost fell at the dismount line as I couldnt get my foot out What would you do differently?: not much, maybe install some aero bars Transition 2
Comments: couldnt find my spot wasted probably 1 minute at least. probably need to set up a little differently What would you do differently?: make sure I go over the plan coming into T2 do i dont get turned around again, put quick pull laces into my shoes Run
Comments: tough to keep the 5min/k pace. My heart beat was over 160 and stayed there for most of the run and I couldn't bring it back down. Had to walk for a part of the hill climb in the forest. Tried to eat some dry oats bars coincident with the water stations, worked ok but probably better to bring a power boost. What would you do differently?: train harder for hills, add some speed work. Post race
Event comments: Excellent for my first race, everything went smoothly particularly my cheering section led by my wife and three kids and chris and glen. I did it. Last updated: 2004-05-23 12:00 AM

Had breakfast at 6:15, raisin bran and banana, had a coffee and went to the bathroom. Great planning given the washrooms were packed. I was able to digest fully by race time. Had a little gatorade prior to racing and a power gel
Went to the race with Steve Bonnyman and his family arriving for 8:30. It took a long time to get into the park and in the future might want to get there earlier although then there is a lot of standing around. Did a few warmup stretches but not anything substantial.
No major warmup, slipped into the water about 20 minutes prior to the swim just to get a sense of the buoyancy and the feel of the water at about 64 degrees.
